Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Red Cask Whisky
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed November 13, 2016 (edited January 26, 2017)I'm not sure about the Distiller's review as I do not get any of the notes Blair has expressed. I get a full bouquet of dark fruit and dried fruit. The wine casks that it was finished in come through on the finish with some spiciness and grape jelly. At $35/bottle here in Ontario I figured this would be, at best, a good mixer. What a fantastic surprise to uncover a new Canadian sipper (I'll mix it with something eventually but it's really not necessary). Red wine and whisky, nothing but good stuff! -
Benromach Organic
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed September 23, 2016 (edited April 20, 2017)Oaky typical Speyside (which is a good thing) with a creamy finish. One heck of a whisky. Could drink it all night, but I won't. I wanna save it for later. -
Highland Park 18 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed September 23, 2016 (edited October 11, 2016)Is as advertised. Not sure you can find a more well balanced single malt out there. There's something for everybody in this dram. A little smoke, a little fruit and a little oak. Top of the pile with this bottle. -
Aberlour A'bunadh
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 23, 2016 (edited October 29, 2016)Definite sherry forward flavour profile on this baby. High ABV makes it a little hard to determine the nose, but adding some water mellows it out and banana and fruit start to blossom. Love the spicey fruit and then the long ginger finish. -
Stagg Jr Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch 1
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 24, 2016 (edited February 11, 2017)Wow...this is a nasty bourbon, but in a very good way. Bottled at 67% you have to water this down a bit (or a lot depending on what kind of vibe you're on). Lots of citrus once you get past the burn. When you have the boys over and they're talking sh!t about drinking, bring this bad boy out and watch most of them run away with their tails between their legs. For anybody who has a taste for bourbon, they will appreciate the flavours after some water is added. -
Hammerhead 1989 23 Year
Single Malt — Czech Republic
Reviewed August 24, 2016 (edited October 11, 2016)When I talk to people about whisky, I generally like to tell them that what adds to the experience is understanding the history that goes into each bottle. The water, the wood, the peat, the grains, all have history before they were brought together to create the beautiful liquid we all love to share. And that's not even taking into consideration the time they age together. The Hammerhead has so much history as it was not only lost for years but it was done so in an area that, technically, no longer exists. Who wouldn't want to share a glass? Czech barley, Czech water, Czech Oak. Nothing else is quite like this. Nose is citrus and, dare I say hops? Taste is spice and dark toffee. Finish is a little coffee and spice. Would love if this was bottled at a higher ABV (only 40.7 %). But the story more than makes up for that. Great bottle if you can find it (I found mine while traveling through Prague).
