Transcontinental Rum Line - Mauritius 2017
Aged Rum — Mauritius
Reviewed November 26, 2024 (edited November 27, 2024)Neat is quite nice and gives cane sugar, butterscotch, flan, syrup, cinnamon, alcohol, black pepper, with hints of vanilla and raw almond. Appealing nose and good sipper. The wood is fairly light but occasionally tannic, especially neat. Fills the mouth nicely, even with a splash of water, which brings out a bit of cinnamon and ginger. Finish is medium-long and quite spicy. En daiquiri enhances the honey and almond but obscures a good deal of spice. I prefer it sipped. Still, it's a good value, especially if you're looking for more spirit than barrel. -
Best en daiquiri: big blast of wood, musty cellar, and bitter herbs on the fore. Bitter orange mallow and lime meringue on the mid with some spice but little heat in the end. I might expect this to work in rum amaro drinks like the Lost Plane or the Black Manhattan. Neat/rocks not so much for me. The cellar dominates with stale wood. Much hotter with indistinct sugar and grass notes.33.0 USD per Bottle

Smooth Ambler Old Scout Straight Bourbon (NAS)
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in West Virginia), USA
Reviewed April 16, 2024Very smooth. Middling corn, smooth spiciness, sweet vanilla. -
Tldr: get it for a tropical fruit inflected daiquiri. Neat: Sweet, medium ethanol, pineapple, coconut, some mango on the nose. Taste has the same notes with a lot of sweet vanilla. Definitely sweetened although not painfully so. Daiquiri: quite compelling. Has a strong piña colada inflection. I like it with a light hand on the sugar and medium on the line.
