Glenlivet 12 Year Double Oak
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 6, 2014 (edited July 30, 2014)Nose has notes of wine in it alternating with chocolate espresso beans. Palette is a coffee with a rich vanilla flavor. Finish is just a light sprinkling of spices. I really enjoy the coffee flavors that I get out of this scotch. -
Connemara 12 Year Peated Single Malt
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed June 27, 2014 (edited February 17, 2017)A very peaty nose led to high hopes, but to no avail. Palette is not very pleasant and not very deep. Late palette and early finish gives way to an intensely sour experience- lime like but not in a positive way. Finish is harsh. Unlike other whiskeys the finish is primarily in the nostrils as opposed to the back of the throat. At the very end there is an unpleasant gasoline like quality. I would not drink this again, probably. -
Less smoky and with less depth than the special bottling that I first was introduced to, this whiskey still hits the mark. There are few adjectives that you cannot use to describe it. The nose is peaty and smoky. Palette is everything all at once- sweet (banana bread + honey + vanilla) and smoky (oak? maple? + fire) and oily (kind of carries the full bodied flavor I think) and salty (sea salt). It is the finish that is truly exceptional- a long, lingering smoky feeling tickling over tongue and throat that makes one feel like a dragon. All in all, a scotch worth drinking.

Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 14, 2014 (edited June 28, 2014)Very sweet nose, more of a bite than the scotch whiskeys I've tried. I can taste the corn base. Not very smokey. Adding a drop of water to it really opens it up. Notes of vanilla , caramel, salt, and fruit are much more apparent, where before it was more a cloying sweetness. It's aged well. A smoother sweetness- caramel and toffee blend with spices. Nicer finish too.
