Shackleton Blended Malt
Blended Malt — highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 15, 2018 (edited October 25, 2019)Apple, caramel, vanilla and a bit of smoke in the nose. Smooth dram all the way to the medium to long finish. Smoke and peat linger. I tried this blind. I am not a fan of peaty scotch so this is not one I would buy. However, it tasted like a single malt to me. I was very surprised to find out this was a blend. Much more complex than Monkey Shoulder and other blends in the <$40 price range that get so much praise. If not for the peat this could be an affordable go to for me. 2.75 stars35.0 USD per Bottle -
Woodford Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 11, 2018 (edited September 16, 2018)Nose: Very strong with alcohol. Burnt orange and sugar with lots of vanilla. Taste: Oak, vanilla, apples, sugar and baking spices. Finish: Long and spicy A bit of water did not do much. Maybe a bit sweeter than without. I left this out to air a bit to see if the ethenol might reduce...it didn't? This is much better than I remember. I would not be mad to drink this at all. Different flavors than I usually go for. A nice change of pace. Solid 3.540.0 USD per Bottle -
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 5, 2018 (edited September 11, 2019)A lot of alcohol in the nose. Toffee and nut up front. Long finish of alcohol. A large rock didn't help much. I usually really like wheated bourbon, but this is not for me. I don't understand all the high marks. The flavors are disjointed, and disconnected. Tastes a lot like plastic and medicinal alcohol. I like good flavorful bourbon and this doesn't qualify. I had high hopes for Larceny, and was trying it as part of my September Bourbon Challenge. I can't give it a higher score. There is just not a lot to like here for me. There are so many better $28 bourbons.28.0 USD per Bottle -
Benchmark No. 8 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 1, 2018 (edited January 10, 2019)Well, for $9.99/bottle, I expect: rot-gut, off notes, chemical and alcohol after taste, not to mention fake smoke undertones. I did not find any of these. After following the recommendation of Distiller members that I believe in, I picked a bottle up to make BBQ sauce with. I did sample it prior to make sure I was not ruining a sauce. I was surprised. It is no Blanton's, nor even Buffalo Trace's little brother. However, it had floral sweetness, notes of vanilla and slight spice. At 40% ABV, it's a neat dram, or a great base for mixing or highballs. It has now replaced Early Times as my sauce whiskey. I know it only received a 70/100 from the pro evaluation, but I think I have spent lots more for much lesser pours. 2.75 stars9.99 USD per Bottle -
Lunazul Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 1, 201818.0 USD per Bottle -
Very fruity. A bit smoky in the finish for me. Very complex in a good way. The good part of the finish was too short, and the less desirable notes lingered a bit long. Ice chips really brought out sweetness that I didn't detect at first. Overall a good whiskey bar pour, but no way is it worth the $65 NC price. There are way better drams out there for that amount. 3.25 stars65.0 USD per BottleJake's Billiards
