Balcones True Blue Cask Strength
Corn — Texas, USA
Reviewed February 14, 2020 (edited January 15, 2021)Color: rust Aroma: corn forward with some malt and floral sweetness that leads into slight cabernet scents Taste: pop! there is a warm sweet corn hit but then it mellows into a cream corn and sweet vanilla cream flavor. Finish: though the cask strength hasn’t shown up yet, it makes itself known on the finish. If drinking neat, it screams of cinnamon spicy heat. Adding a bit of water opens up the sweetness and chills the heat a little buy does not destroy the flavor profile. And at 64.7% ABV, a little water can’t hurt, amirite. Smooth factor: lol -
Color: copper Aroma: spicy, multi-grain bread factory Taste: Cinnamon punches you in the tongue. While you figure that out, it coats the mouth and adds spice cake with frosting. Finish: you’d think there wouldn’t be much of a finish with as much initial flavor as there was, but there is a slow build to a finish of cinnamon and malty spice heat that lingers in a good way. What am I drinking? Smooth factor: C

Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 14, 2020 (edited February 21, 2020)Color: rust Aroma: malty sweetness and yeast. Taste: initial hit is oily and coats the mouth but isn’t overly flavorful. Then it builds, vanilla pod and unsweetened cookie dough, then boom! cinnamon coffee cake. Finish: the finish is everything with this pour since the front end makes you feel a little cheated. You get EVERYTHING on the back end and it’s delicious, spicy, sweet, and flavorful. Where 1920 is balanced spicy sweetness overall, 1910 hits big on the back end, and without the burn of big finishes. Smooth factor: A- -
