Arran 14 Year (Old Label)
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed February 21, 2017 (edited September 25, 2019)A pleasant whiskey that is more floral than it is fruit, and despite having had some contact with sherry casks, the final product is more aligned with ex-bourbon flavours. The nose is honeyed, with faint hints of citrus and a generous dose of summer flowers. The body and palate are light and lively, with the impression that you're drinking a young whisky. The dram finishes spicy and medium in length. Again, not bad. -
Mortlach Rare Old
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 20, 2017 (edited October 6, 2019)Wawawiwa, as Borat would say. This is good whisky, and only deserves Distiller's 80 rating if you're nasally congested. How else am I to explain such a low score? The nose screams sherry, with notes of sultana raisins and crisp lemons. The body carries well at 43.4% ABV, with more sweet notes of raisins and cinnamon. The finish is medium in length, with appropriate spiciness . I like it plenty. -
Picture a Lowland distilled in Japan - the nose is weak, with notes of apple juice and almonds (faintly). The palate is sweet and fruity (almost like an orchard), though quite lacking in body and complexity. The finish is a tad short and uninspiring. Overall, I can see myself enjoying this in its proper context: lounging under the sun with a dram and ice on hand.

Auchentoshan Virgin Oak
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 20, 2017 (edited August 13, 2017)A pleasant whisky that lacks complexity, with faint floral notes and always-welcomed honey. Oak is the true superstar here (lumberyard was the first thing that came to mind when I blind tasted this). It's medium-bodied, with a palate that really highlights both the honey and wooden aromas. The finish is spiced and somewhat medium in length. Enjoyable, but not essential for the avid whisky collector. -
Wonderful whiskey, but I wonder if the name wrongly influences the aromas some have used to describe it - as if the word "coffey" somehow subconsciously makes us taste and smell "coffee" here. Blind-tasted, my experience was quite pleasant and complex. The nose has wonderful notes of nuttiness (maybe pecans, maybe almonds) and a certain fruitness that is evocative of granny smith apples. The body is well-rounded, though on the verge of disintegrating at 45% ABV, with a palate rich in chocolate and caramel (someone here likened it to a crème brulée and I think it's spot on). The finish is incredibly smooth with enough presence to last a minute or so. All in all a really good japanese whiskey.

Good bourbon, with notes of charred oak, a touch of butterscotch and raisins (yeah, predictable). The palate has elements of citrus and smoke that really complement the nose. The finish is a touch spicier than it should be, taking away that much desired smoothness, but the overall drink is very pleasant. Well done.

Amrut Fusion Indian Single Malt Whisky
Single Malt — Bangalore, India
Reviewed February 18, 2017 (edited October 4, 2018)How does this happen? Someone here explain to me how Distiller gave this whisky an 84 score! It's mindbending I tell you! From start to finish you're treated to a wonderful amalgam of aromatic wonder, and at 50% ABV it all hits you with so much confidence and presence. The craftsmanship behind Fusion is simply brilliant. The nose is fruity and tropical, with hints of mangoes as a waft of tropical notes evaporates from the glass. The palate is all-encompassing to your mouth as a touch of peat, smoke, and iodine fuse with brown sugar and barley. The finish is rich with the addition of wood notes (I know it's oak but it really just comes across as general yet delicious lumber), lingering for minutes on end. Brilliantly done, Amrut! -
BenRiach 15 Year Pedro Ximenez Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 18, 2017 (edited August 13, 2017)Definitely a pleasure for sherry lovers, particularly if Pedro Ximenez aromas are your thing. I am one, so I really enjoyed this whisky, especially its finish where the dried raisin notes really affirm themselves. The nose is complex, with dried fruits, caramel and crisp lemons, and the body is full and syrupy. Enjoy! -
Deanston 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 18, 2017 (edited August 13, 2017)Yeah... This one's tough to review only because I almost drowned in my tumbler from the boredom of this whisky. You would think something with 46% ABV would hold up with some body and flavour, but that's really not the case here. It's barely medium-bodied, the finish is relatively short (though spicy), and the nose lacks depth. That's not to say there's nothing enjoyable here: the citrus notes, faint apples and spices are evocative of apple pie (and who doesn't love apple pie!). It isn't bad at all, though such timid endorsements are never a good thing.
