Rye — Indiana (bottled in Kentucky), USATastedA solid rye for a solid price. Great straight or in things.
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedSurprisingly was rated pretty high on a blind taste test. I love this bourbon for mixers and in things, but straight not so much...until I was blindfolded. Blind taste results: "Lighter on the nose, sweet with a little brown sugar. Taste wise, a little nutty followed by quite a spice and smoothed out finish. Not overly in your face about any aspect, it's pretty well balanced" . Good staple to have on hand.
Old Grand-Dad 114 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedBlind tasting notes: "On the nose, slight butterscotch but mostly...burning heat. It's pretty strong, but amongst the ethanol you can pick out a but of nuttiness (almond cashew). On the taste, it's pretty well balanced with a little bit of nut and is for sure higher proof. Flavors taper off too fast, they should have stuck around longer. Decent pour". I still prefer the OGD - Bottled In Bond by a long shot, but this pour for sure would have been better had I added a splash of water.
Wild Turkey Bourbon 101
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedOne of the first whiskey purchases I made that I ended up pawning the bottle off to someone because of it's "harshness", but after years of growing up, I've circled back to try it again. Blind taste test notes: "Light amber in color, the nose has a 'strong heat' with no real aromas picked out until adding a little water (which lets out honey and vanilla). Taste wise there was an immediate cherry flavor, followed by peppery spice and clove, which was again mellowed quite a bit with water to a much more palatable dram. Not bad for the price at all"
Elijah Craig Small Batch
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedThis is a pour I go back and forth on. Some store picks are great (some aren't), while the plain Jane bottle you find on every other shelf is good, not great. Blind tasting notes: "Nose has some vanilla brown sugar notes. On the taste, it was very smooth from the start. Like a 'grassy knoll on the south-eastern side of Ireland'. Little light oat, little nutmeg, sort of muted flavors and a quickly tapering finish. Slight, slight oak."
1792 Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedLots and lots of banana on the nose, some fruit notes and a little bit of honey. Slight ease into caramel when tasted, and then spice and back to vanilla banana on the finish. Mellowed out into a richer, fruiter flavor when diluted a bit. It's a very decent pour for a mid/low shelf sampling, but nothing spectacular. Good bottle to keep around.
Willett Family Estate Bottled Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USATastedI cannot get enough of this rye. Such a unique spice palette.
Blood Oath Bourbon Pact No. 4
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedThe label says "deep oak... and warm caramel and honey" coupled with "deep chocolate, vanilla with extra spice". Couldn't agree more. The nose is slightly muted for what I'd expect, but the mouthfeel and mature flavors that come after sampling are not holding anything back. This bottle will be one I'll be sad to see go, very good. Lower 90s for me
Stagg Jr. Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATastedQuickly becoming one of my favorite drams. Lots of spice, lots of deep fruits, and yes...it's hot (not batch #10 really, it's the best batch imo). Nose is a little deceiving of the bite that comes shortly after, but once it subsides there's lovely notes of leather and fruit. Very well balanced bourbon, something I always want to have a bottle or three in reserve.
