Pierre Ferrand Ambre Cognac
Cognac — Grande Champagne, France
Reviewed January 7, 2020 (edited December 19, 2021)First foray into cognac. Big bourbon, scotch, mezcal, and aged rum guy. This stuff is fricking delicious. Notes of pear, apple and grape are in the nose. Jammy pears and grape dominate the palette. Surprisingly enough I do get the astringent black tea bite that the review mentions. Oily lingering finish with light oaky undertones. Great first cognac! -

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 2, 2019 (edited December 27, 2019)Good solid bourbon, but sits at a weird price point. A little too expensive to be a daily drinker but not exceptional enough to be a special bourbon. I guess it’s an every other day drinker! Caramel, vanilla, and burnt sugar on the nose. Flavor profile is all sweet up front and a slight dry rye at the end. Not terribly complex but not in a bad way. At this price point I’d rather drink blantons which is what this is trying to be and only slightly cheaper. Stick with the unique 1910 -
Not sure why all the low reviews, very similar to Weller Special Reserve which gets much higher ratings. Nose is full of banana, bubblegum and some clove... also hints of bakingbread. Taste is not terribly complex, but most wheaters aren’t in my opinion. Soft wheat bread topped with bananas, and a butterscotch, caramel drizzle sums it up. Lingering baking spice, notably clove, aftertaste with a touch a heat. Finish is dry and has a nice longer. The more I drink it the more I like it.

This is my first foray into aged runs, having drank rye, bourbon, and single malts mostly... some anejo and mezcal. Since this is my first the rating # is somewhat arbitrary. Nose is full of butterscotch, toffee, molasses, slight hints of pear, banana bread and baking spices. Palette is nice and warm, big bursts of toffee and brown butter. Lots of caramel, molasses and butterscotch that fades into vanilla and oak. Finish is somewhat short lived but delicious. It’s delicious, especially after a meal as a dessert drink, but not altogether too complex. More to come as my palette acclimates.

Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed October 19, 2019 (edited February 29, 2020)I don’t hate it. Even though it says whisky and doesn’t taste like it, I don’t hate it. The nose has an insane amount of sugars. Caramel, burnt sugar, molasses, and fruit sugars with a dash of vanilla and oak. Palate carries the same, all types of sugar and then an interesting counterbalance if anisette, rye and cinnamon spice come through to balance it out. Finish is mouthwash tingly with slight burn and finishes quick. Good dessert whiskey. -
Belle Meade Cask Strength Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Tennessee), USA
Reviewed October 9, 2019125.8 proof. Great deep and complex cask strength juice here. Nice nose with banana bread, oak, vanilla, oak.... and yes, jet fuel. Palate has notes of raisin, chocolate, oak, vanilla, cherry, leather and a punch of cinnamon spice, but oddly without the briny rye flavours. Finish is disappointingly short and quite dry. Overall great bourbon. Water brought out fruit and nuts, turned the banana bread into fruit cake/banana bread combo. -
For me this is a more complex and spicy version of Weller SR. Nose has some sweet hay, notes of vanilla and oak, banana, and finally some caramel apple sweetness. Palate is full of spicy cinnamon and caramel apple sweetness, very smooth but also has character. Hints of banana and graham cracker round this one out. Body is nice and dry, mid linger, not too hot but the spicy tingle lingers.
