WhistlePig Old World Cask Finish Rye 12 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Vermont), USA
Reviewed January 14, 2019 (edited June 17, 2019)This is for the 12 year bespoke cask finished In Amburana. Wow, utterly amazing. Colour is light honey, strawlike. Nose is like a caramel apple, bright fresh and sugary. The taste is very much cinnamon toast crunch, true to the cask finish there is some sugarcane in here with a dose of cinnamon, maple, toffee, and cream. Dry, tannic texture. The spiciness and heat of the rye have been mellowed our significantly but there is a long floral, cinnamon finish. -
Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 10, 2019 (edited June 11, 2021)Davidson’s store pick, Barrel 483. Nose of baking fruit pastries, apples and pears with melted sugar. Very complex flavours, brown sugar and vanilla is replaces by toasted oak is replaced by a linger of cinnamon and baking spice. Very dry, somewhat spicy finish that feels like raw cinnamon and lingers. This is easy drinking, complex, and finishes with a punch, three contrasts that combine my favorite elements of bourbon. My fav. Of the Davidson’s store picks -
Very thin and very light. Nose has lots of oak, a little maple, vanilla, banana and a nice nose tingling mix of heat and pepper spice. Taste is the same as the nose here, sweet, then peppery and with a surprising amount of heat, showing it’s youth. Finish is the best part, nice, long and spicy. It’s good, just not my preference in a scotch, almost feels more like identity crisis rather than complex. Water completely ruins this pour.

Good, especially for the value. Somewhat imperceptible nose of overripe banana and clove. Body is also very light, almost too light and not complex enough. Cherry, oak, and vanilla are what this is all about. Finish is medium to long and has wisps of oak, clove and cinnamon while predominately raisin and leather.
