Ragged Branch Cowboy Cut Bourbon
Bourbon — Virginia, USA
Reviewed June 21, 2024 (edited July 15, 2024)Ragged Branch is a pretty solid Virginia distillery, and this is a great example of some of the good work they do. A wheated, double oak, barrel strength bourbon. Smooth, oaky and sweet throughout. Every sip has a slightly different profile pop up... alll good, but not consistent. Might be better (i.e. more consistent profile) if it sits for a few weeks after the neck is drank down. Even though I can not pinpoint specific detailed flavors (yet) its a great bourbon (so far).63.0 USD per Bottle -
A clean Kona coffee flavor, similar to Grind (Grind has more of a Arabica Coffee flavor), but not as sugary nor syrupy as Kahlua. Sweeter than Grind (more of a molasses flavor than sugar, unlike Grind), but nowhere near as sweet as Kahlua. If you like the Revolver cocktail, I would use this if you are using a wheater whiskey as your base. If you are using a bourbon, Grind or Mr Black are better options than this. The reason being, the smoothness of the Kona compliments the smoothness of a wheater. However, the sweet flavoring off this one may make a bourbon revolver too sweet. Hence, the reason to revert back to Grind or Mr Black. Not bad. Excellent Kona flavor shines throughout. Only draw back is that it is overly (and needlessly) sweetened.20.0 USD per BottleThe Party Source

All of the reviews here are right on. Eventhough it is not a blend, it tastes like a bourbon aged in a red wine barrel and slightly mixed with an Irish whisky. May sound weird, but tastes pretty good. Can't empathize enough on how much I underestimated the sweetness of this whisky... a little more than my liking, but still very good.Norfolk Naval Station, VA

Smell: earthy, sweet, boozy and banana. Taste: banana, mango, grassy with a hint of lemon/citrus and sweetness (that is unclear to me of sugar cane, molasses or fruits). Smooth, smooth smooth after taste with very slight ethanol. Excellent Rum... however a better mixer that sipper... but don't get me wrong, not a bad sipper if you like a light Rum funk. Make a Mai Tai (Royal Hawaiian style) out of the 3 Plantation rums (3 star, Fuji, Xaymaca) and you won't be disappointed... one of the best Mai Tai's I've ever had (only 2 better I paid >$25 for a single from some high end places/bartenders).

Only spiced rum that I have found to be a decent sipper and not just a mixer. Pleasant balance of coffee and vanilla flavors with just a hint of oak, cloves, sweetness from molasses and something earthy that I haven't figured out yet. Definately deviated from the vanilla and cherry flavors of most spiced rums. Aftertaste is a little disappointing... not much of a bite from the ethanol. Will buy again when I see it. Interested in what cocktails I might be able to enhance with it. Excellent with Coca-Cola, and definitely makes various Mai Tai's better (Royal Hawaiian as the top float rum... would be better if it was a higher proof... more ethanol bite).

Regardless how it tastes, my Dad worked for Jim Beam for 30 some odd years, and they paid for the vast majority of my childhood life. Plus, when my Dad passed, Jim Beam Inc has always been there for my Mom... and my Dad was just a plant maintenance supervisor at one of their many plants. My cousin worked for them and they helped him start his brewery... great company that cares about people that work for them. That accounts for 1 out of the 4 stars. As for the bourbon... average, but not bad for being mass produced. Way better than the bottom shelf, plastic bottle only stuff. Pales in comparison to Knob Creek (subsidiary), but out shines Basil Hayden (another subsidiary). Mixes better with DeKuyper products (another subsidiary) than other better tasting liqours.
