Compass Box The Peat Monster (Classic Brown Label)
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed March 26, 2016 (edited August 28, 2017)Tropical fruit candy sweetness throughout, pepper, melons through the finish. Peat and smoke seemed restrained and filtered through sugarcane before entering the whisky. 3.5/5 -
First whiff of the bottle is sweet scotch, second whiff is what I was expecting of this peated whisky. It's a soft nose packed with strong scents. It brings orange pith, new gym shorts slightly used, gym floor, flower garden, fresh soil. I don't like the smell of smoked canned oysters, which this smells like, but I like it here. The palate is... wow; soft beginning, mouthfeel, finish. So smooth. This tastes like sitting poolside on the Fourth of July with the smell of fireworks and pool water passing by. Tastes like old old books and heavy English pipe tobacco. It's all surrounded by a soft sweetness to round it out. If you want a scotch to sip for awhile, choose this one.

On the nose I get artificial orange juice, York peppermint patties, and light chocolate. About the same on the palate; everything is very light including hints of cinnamon and pineapple juice. The finish brings vanilla and the mouthfeel of the salt that stays in your mouth after you have bacon and eggs, without the bacon and eggs flavor however. This is a gentle whisky, one that I'd let my dad, sister, or anyone else try that's new to whisky. I think it has its time and place, nothing flashy, but it's enjoyable. I'd compare it to my Aberlour 12 yr Double Cask except toned down and easier to sip.

The Oamaruvian Cask Strength DoubleWood 16 Year
Single Grain — South Island, New Zealand
Reviewed February 2, 2016 (edited December 6, 2016)[Bottle 208/400 from Barrel 328] A souvenir from my stay in New Zealand. Cheers to my new Kiwi friends. With no water added, all I smell is nail polish and wine. Adding water changes everything- graham cracker, butterscotch (the yellow candies that my grandparents always had), salted caramel, clementine, red wine (my wife thinks it smells like dessert). I smell both the wine and bourbon. A full nose on this one. Taste- Very fruity! Very full upfront juicy and fruity. Mouthfeel is sticky, sticks to your tongue and refuses to leave. Red cinnamon candies before they get terribly spicy (grandparents also had those). Red grapes. A slight cranberry juice like tartness. Leatherish quality on the back of the tongue. The bourbon influence is hiding deep in this whisky. Quality bourbon creamy finish with vanilla tobacco to send it home. This is my favorite whisky.
