I had the pleasure to try this dram and although it had very classic scotch characteristics, for the price and considering it was a Macallan, it was ok. The nose was a little fruity and spicy, and the palate was warm and lasting. Maybe a little honey and dark fruits. For $70 on a 12 year old, there are more flavorful whisky sour there for a better price.

Some people will think that this is a great value, or that is not that impressive. This rum has an age statement of 21 years. Compared to other 21 years like Appleton Estate, the price for this bottle is a bargain. On the nose this is pleasant with notes is caramel, molasses and some tobacco and leather, but compared with the AE21, it seems lighter. The palate is very similar and the finish is good and medium lasting. Overall this is a good sipping rum and a great value, but it lacks the depth and body of AE21.

Ron Barceló Imperial Onyx
Aged Rum — Dominican Republic
Reviewed August 29, 2020 (edited September 3, 2020)For those of you that like Diplomatico, this is a great alternative. The flavor profile is similar, but there’s a little more tobacco and leather. The finish is a little dry, but now as sweet as Diplomatico. The price makes this a great value. -
Longrow Peated
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited October 9, 2020)On the nose, slightly peaty and smoky, with trace of fruits and honey. A good choice for those that want to stray down the path of peated whisky. The palate and finish are enjoyable, not too strong and not to light. -
Port Askaig 110 Proof
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited August 29, 2020)This was a surprising dram. On the nose and palate it reminded me of Port Charlotte Heavily Peated. Peat, smoke and salt water. There was a little citrus on the palate and there was something else that I could not point to a reference, but it was there every time. Overall this whisky brings a punch and is very enjoyable. -
Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed August 15, 2020 (edited September 5, 2020)This whisky has a punch. At 57.8% this whisky last for miles. The aroma is sweet, rum like, honey and vanilla. The taste was complex, rich, full and left me wanting more. The finish is long thanks to the high ABV, so a little water opens this up to a higher level. It’s pricey, but it’s good. -
Compass Box The Peat Monster (Classic Brown Label)
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed August 12, 2020 (edited August 23, 2020)I finally opened my Peat Monster (disclaimer, the label is different from the one shown here) and I was expecting a stronger punch. When I compared Ardbeg 10 to The Peat Monster, the nose on the Ardbeg was so much more, and the palate had more flavor, the Peat Monster was more salty and briny. -
Don Q Signature Release Single Barrel 2005
Aged Rum — Puerto Rico
Reviewed August 12, 2020 (edited September 2, 2020)This was an great rum. I had it a few years back before I learned how to appreciate good spirits more. Sadly it’s gone, but I have the 2007 waiting in queue. The flavor were good, but if you have the opportunity to try one of Don Qs Double or Aged casks releases, give it a try. Bouts the Vermouth and Sherry are very good. -
This is a special and complex whiskey. The maturation on three woods gives it so much depth, it reminded me of Redbreast 21, but at a much lower price. The port finish, truly comes at the end of the palate, similar to the New Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14, which is also finished in Port. The finish is full and flavorful.
