Rabbit Hole Cavehill Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed February 26, 2022 (edited March 6, 2022)A decent bourbon to be sure, but maybe a little overpriced. The nose gave off maple and oatmeal bread. The palate was full of spicy cinnamon. The lingering finish brought more peppery spice and a touch of smoky vanilla. -
Look, I know poo-pooers like to talk about how most hard-to-find allocated bottles aren’t nearly as good as other bourbons that you can readily find on the shelf. This is NOT one of those bottles. This stuff is fucking EXCELLENT for the price point. Big dusty notes of corn on the nose are mixed with more reserved notes of oak. I definitely get the Red Hots on the palate like a lot of people say, but also big oak and vanilla notes with just a little bit of tobacco. The finish is long and slightly spicy, but very pleasantly so. I’d always keep a bottle of this stuff around if I could find it!

Man, I dig this stuff. I always buy it whenever I see a bottle. At 104 proof, this baby is dangerously easy on the way down. The nose is sweet and tingly, with notes of baking spices. The palate almost reminds me of a caramel macchiato. The finish is medium-long but far from hot, offering smooth oak notes with pleasant ethanol accents.

This was my first time trying anything from the 1792 line. I got a little bit of pear and, interestingly enough, pine needles on the nose. Palate was smooth and full of butterscotch. The most interesting part of this whiskey was the finish. There was no gradual transition. Almost as if a switch was flipped, the creamy, buttery palate instantly transformed into a spicy finish with warming cinnamon. A very impressive range of flavors for a whiskey that was on sale for under $50!

Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 6, 2021 (edited December 17, 2021)Such a great pour for the $! I call Johnny Drum my favorite “Summer Bourbon” because it has such pleasant citrus/lemon notes on the palate. Bright oakiness follows before a short-medium finish. File this under “gateway bourbons” for your less-enlightened friends to try! -
Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Nevada), USA
Reviewed November 6, 2021 (edited November 27, 2021)F-ck me. I searched far and wide for a bottle of this stuff and paid handsomely for it. The sexiness of barrel-strength MGP juice aged in a Wild West state like Nevada clouded my judgement. This bourbon was hot. Like, really hot. The only other thing that stood out to me other than the heat was the bitter taste that overpowered the smokiness and the notes of sweet corn. Most expensive mixer I’ve ever bought. -
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 26, 2021 (edited November 10, 2021)Smells like something you should definitely drink on Christmas Eve. Nose has big notes of burnt buttery sugar followed by a fainter sting of ethanol. Palate is rich with notes of creme brûlée and oak char with very little heat. Medium finish with sweet hints of caramel. -
Unbelievable bang for your buck. Burnt caramel and faint mint on the nose. Peanuts and dusty corn give way to vanilla on the palate. The finish is oaky, buttery, long, and packs the most delightful Kentucky burn I’ve had in a while. I now see what all the hype is about. Dollar-for-dollar, this stuff is incredible. I’ll gladly take this over 90% of the allocated unicorns the taters fawn over!
