Yellow Spot 12 Year Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed February 14, 2015 (edited June 15, 2021)I'm not a huge fan of Irish whiskey...I didn't really like the much lauded Redbreast 12, so maybe it's just my palette that prefers its cousins over to other side of the North Channel. But...I do like this over the sibling Green Spot and definately over the Redbreast or Teelings. I can look at its color all day. A beautiful autumn-y bronze. Nose---papayas and mango. Exotic tropical fruits. Taste is sweet. But sweet is relative. Not as sweet as the sugar coated Kraken rum I had, but definatley sweet for a whiskey. Without water, I just felt the Amrut burn. I need a bit of water to soften it. If you like Irish whiskey, this is a must-have. If you're like me and prefer the Scottish cousins, save the $100 on a good bottle of Lagavulin or Laphroaig. -
Sullivans Cove American Oak Bourbon Cask
Single Malt — Tasmania, Australia
Reviewed February 4, 2015 (edited May 14, 2015)Decent mild, everyday leisurely dram. I'm not sure it's worth its price though. Better bargains to be had at this price range, that offer more complexity and depth. Go for it's cousin--French Oak. Deeper and more character. -
Hillrock Estate Single Malt
American Single Malt — New York, USA
Reviewed January 27, 2015 (edited April 15, 2021)I love this color! I actually bought it for the color, but kept it for the taste. It's bourbon-esque (is that a word), with a kick of rye. If you like bourbon and rye, it's for you. Not really comparable to Scottish single malts or blends at all. Worth a try---but pricey , can get better value elsewhere -
Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 24, 2015 (edited April 16, 2015)I can't compare to,other eyes, this is my first. But---incredibly clean, fresh, and beyond its 2 yrs. -
Sullivans Cove Double Cask
Single Malt — Tasmania, Australia
Reviewed January 23, 2015 (edited November 11, 2020)It's a clean, easy drinking whisky...but really very much unidimensional. Not much going on in there, no complexity or layers of flavors. Try the French oak, by far much better. -
Compass Box Great King St Artist's Blend
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed January 20, 2015 (edited March 8, 2021)For the price, it's one of the best blends out there. Better than any single malt at the same price tag. It's squarely in same price range as the Johnnie Walker Black---but a much better quality than the Black. I think the Black uses some harsher grains or lower quality malts. -
Glenmorangie Signet
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 12, 2015 (edited July 30, 2017)Very unique---worthwhile splurge. Tastes of dark chocolate and coffee. Strong lasting finish. Definitely not one for an everyday dram, but instead something to enjoy with friends and family on a special occasion. -
Balblair 2000 1st Release
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 12, 2015 (edited July 30, 2017)Not bad for the price, just nothing too unique. Probably a good everyday dram
