Kilchoman Machir Bay (2012 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed January 11, 2015 (edited June 14, 2018)Not too peaty, and doesn't taste as young as it is. Fairly priced, and acts much more mature compared to other islays of similar age. Kilchoman is a new distillery, and at first I was apprehensive of buying this---didn't really want to give charity to yet another startup that falls short of expectations. But---this is quite good. Worth a buy. -
Edradour Caledonia 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 20, 2014 (edited July 30, 2017)Much better than their standard 10 year old. They usually are all over the place making wood experimentation as the norm, without a real house flavor like you'd find in most distillers, but this one really stood out. UPDATE 2/26: Had a fresh sample from a newly opened bottle. Nice distinctly sherry profile, but not as deep or complex as a Glendronach or Macallan. Lighter, fresher. Still getting the typical profile though of yellow raisins, dry fruit...just not as deep. Worthwhile purchase for a gentler, milder sherry cask whisky. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed December 19, 2014 (edited October 21, 2016)Smoky, barbeque smells gives way to an equally smoky and malty taste. With ice, there's a substantial fire and burn, almost like chillies. I'd recommend without ice...but, it's strong at its ABV. -
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed December 19, 2014 (edited January 1, 2020)Really peaty, overpowering aroma on the nose. Followed by a strong pungent taste to the palette. The smoke resonates throughout, and almost scratches your throat and insides as it goes down. Much too peaty and smoky for me. -
Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 19, 2014 (edited July 30, 2017)For a rum cask finished, it was actually very nicely done. Much better than other rum finishes. But---quite honestly, for the price, I feel I'd be better off with the Balvenie doublewood -
Corsair Triple Smoke American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed December 19, 2014I'm probably just not ready for maverick style whiskey. Too many flavors happening at the same time, just couldn't figure out any one certain stand out taste on the palette
