Craigellachie 13 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 17, 2022 (edited October 7, 2022)This impressed me much more than expected. Eminently drinkable upon the first pour, which I don’t expect anymore, even from premium vintages. No water needed. A familiar nose, but part of what those who started on Dewar’s love and remember will rush your tasting. Citrus, apples, some spice, and a reserved but warm palate with a full and oily presence greet you. Despite the 92 proof, this could easily be a friendly and comfortable weeknight dram, or something special to start the weekend. You’re left with a quick finish and no strong lingering flavors, but perhaps the sudden desire to try it all over again. Very impressed by a whiskey as young as this in a market whose products trend younger every year. -
Even better after the second or third tasting. Notes of butter, layers of balanced sweetness, and incredibly smooth. Just enough corn to tell you where it came from but enough complexity and huge mouthfeel to keep every sip enticing. This is truly the best corn whiskey I have ever had. It has as much going on as some scotch, but needs no water.
