Jack Daniel's Tennessee Straight Rye
Rye — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited March 30, 2020)Sampling it neat, it has a clean spicy rye nose and taste. There are notes of vanilla from the wood and a tiny hint of sweetness from the small ration of corn in this bill. Overall a well balanced dram. To me, a watery mouthfeel due to the charcoal filtering--but, many others prefer that.20.0 USD per Bottle -
I have been curious about this rare malted rye, and it is finally available to me at a few shops here in Missouri. My notes are on a neat dram from Batch 3. According to their website the mashbill is 51% malted rye 34% rye 12% corn and 3% malted barley. I know that Distiller states that it is 100% rye, perhaps Batch 1 was. It has the rye flavor and spice, but, is not as sharp as most ryes. It has a wonderful soft, almost creamy, mouthfeel The finish is rather long with a gentle spiciness. I hope you live in one of the few states that carries this dram, or at least your state's dram laws are liberal enough to ship it in. This is truly a unique style of rye35.0 USD per Bottle

Jim Beam Distiller's Cut
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited October 14, 2020)There is wonderful depth of flavor--corn sweetness with a molasses note, rye spice, oak, cooked dried fruit, ---yum! At 100 proof it finishes a little hot as others have said before me. But, like a fine Scotch, a few drops of water opens the flavors even more and eases that heat. Thank you to those who reviewed before me to clue me in to this fine value.20.0 USD per Bottle -
Evan Williams White Label Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited March 23, 2020)After reading glowing reviews of this bourbon on this site, I decided I should try it. No one carried it in my little town, but a few phone calls to nearby Kansas City located it, at a grocery store chain no less. With tax it was $17. It has a wonderful intense nose of molasses, corn, brown sugar, a little dried fruit, and cured pipe tobacco. The flavors are much the same with a wonderful soft mouthfeel. Surprisingly, at 100 proof there is very little burn or heat, no more than a typical 86. The rich flavors hold up well to a few drops of water. This is the equal, and in many cases, superior to most bourbons at double the price.17.0 USD per Bottle -
Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited March 23, 2020)This goes for just under $40 where I live near KC. I found it listed for $20 at that Minnesota spirits store that ships to MO. With shipping, it ran me $25 each for six bottles. My bottle is from barrel 819, barreled 4-12-10; bottled 6-11-18. This is a fantastic bottle---sipping it neat at room temperature straight out of the shipping case...The nose is full, corn sweetness and malted barley combine with barrel char to seemingly give a slight maple/honey note. This continues on the tongue with the addition of dark red fruit (cherry?) and a pronounced sweetness---more than I usually pick up with Evan Williams. It has good legs in the glass and a silky touch on the tongue. The finish is long, slight heat at the beginning and then a lingering sweet honeyed fruitiness that is still there 2-3 minutes later. Just the ticket to induce the need for another sip. I wonder how long I can force myself to make my six bottles last.38.0 USD per Bottle -
A rather average blend, with a moderate touch of peat. A bargain at a fair price. Notes of honey flavor, biscuit, malt, pear?--perhaps. I was curious about this, so spent about $33 for 1.75 to have it shipped in from the west coast. It is pleasant enough at that price point to use as a "jug" scotch for parties, etc. However, for daily availaibility I will probably stay with Grant's Family Reserve, which I don't have to ship in.20.0 USD per Bottle

This is sublime. There is subtle interplay of sweet malt, citrus, pear and apple. The smoke is so subtle many would not catch it--at least it is hard for me. There is some peppery spice on the back of the palate---but this decreases as the dram is exposed to the air. The finish is medium and is both tart and sweet fruit (apple?) with the faintest touch of smoke in the background. Very Nice!!!45.0 USD per Bottle

The Glenrothes Peated Cask Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited January 9, 2020)I have been curious about this malt, but in my area it goes for $70-80---just not that curious to go in blind. Then I found a Minnesota online shipper selling it for $25; then, on New Year's Day they had one day free shipping special. Who of weak will could resist that? Pouring neat it is a light straw color. Nose is sweet, citrus/floral, with a whiff of peat. On the tongue these are all evident. Mouthfeel is light, typical of malts from tall stills such as those of Glenrothes and Glenmorangie. In fact, except for the peat, this reminds me of Glenmorangie 10. Coming from the former Islay casks used to age this malt, the peat is not a peat-bomb, but is a nice smoky accent. I prefer this at cool to room temperature to allow all the floral esters to be available. Chilled in the frig it is much less complex and the peat rules more on the tongue. I am enjoying this very much. I appreciate that some distillers such as Glenrothes and Spey do a longer, slower fermentation to allow their yeasts to develop those floral notes.70.0 USD per Bottle -
Antiquary 12 Year
Blended Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 23, 2019 (edited December 30, 2019)This is not available in my area, so I shipped it in from a California source when they had it on sale. Wow! What a bargain! It pours neat a dark amber. It must have a fairly high proportion of malts in the blend---I swear it has some legs. Nose is sweet malt/citrus with a small touch of peat. Those hold true on the tongue as well--and linger on a smooth rich finish. I prefer this to Chivas 12. I think I like this and Dewar's 12 equally--but they taste different--so, I will keep both on hand.18.0 USD per Bottle
