Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt (Discontinued)
Blended Malt — Japan
Reviewed August 31, 2019 (edited November 29, 2021)The nose instantly smells of honey and candied fruit, with straw and hints of oak and barley sugar. The honey sweetness carries over onto the palate with a rich maltiness that coats the mouth, but is otherwise a little one dimensional. The finish is medium with a fading honey sweetness along with notes of straw. -

The color is a deep amber with thick oils that coat the glass. The nose has a gentle, floral rye spiciness, with chocolate milk, vanilla, oak and a touch of cereal. The palate is rich, soft and oily and coats the mouth with rye, nicely balanced by the chocolate milk as oak and vanilla are present underneath. The finish features more oak, while the rye, vanilla and chocolate milk come together for a medium long finish that fades nicely. The aftersniff is reminiscent of grandma pearl’s homemade potpourri that has settled in the back of her sock drawer for 4 years. The bouquet is a rich mix of canned cherry pie filling and soft serve vanilla ice cream from ponderosa. Subtle sniffs of carrion and patchouli round out the scent.

Laphroaig 25 Year Cask Strength (2009 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed July 31, 2019 (edited April 8, 2020)The color is a rich amber, just as you would expect sherry to be with legs that immediately coat the glass. Sherry dominates the nose, along with smoke, seaweed, brine, ripe fruitiness and a hint of straw. The palate is rich and smokey, filling the mouth with the traditional Laphroaig flavor, but much smoother than the usual, younger offerings. The sherry sweetness balance the peatiness perfectly with the two flavors blending so that they keep each other in balance. The finish is medium long with the mouth staying smokey while the fruit sweetness subtlety fades. -
