Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select (Astor Wines and Spirits NYC)
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)The nose is full of oak and ripe fruit, with fresh vibrant flowers following along with touches of vanilla. It's strong on fresh citrus, along with touches of honey and straw. The palate is very gentle, allowing you to swirl It endlessly as oak and vanilla gently coat the mouth before giving way to a burst of rye spice. Slight hints of rape fruitiness comes out at the very end to round this out. This more or less fits the profile for Buffalo Trace, except being a single barrel makes the flavors just a bit more intense and rich. That is the joy of this offering is that for the price you can get something so wonderful. The finish is medium long with the spiciness fading disappointingly quick but leaving a nice aftertaste of oak, vanilla, rye and the slightest hint of fresh fruit. Pretty wonderful to sit on and a great offering of Kentucky bourbon. -
Four Roses Single Barrel Select (NHLO OESV 10 yr 8 m)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)The nose is vibrant and full of charred oak, floral rye, a touch of spearmint and vanilla, and fresh fruit. The nose does come across a bit simple but it is very inviting. Its fresh and rich and unmistakably Four Roses. The palate can be swirled around for quite some time before a burst of black pepper kicks in, lighting up the entire mouth. Sharp oak and vanilla fill the mouth as rye spice comes in behind it all. The rye loses its floral notes and comes off as mostly spicy, yet for as spicy as this is, there is also a wonderful smoothness to it. The finish is long and spicy, and very chewy. Oak and vanilla fade in the background as the mouth tingles from each sip. -
The nose is a swirl charred oak, vanilla, molasse and a touch of cherry. Its very smooth and gentle, yet very inviting. The palate is dry, yet smooth and covers the front of the mouth in pepper. Sharp notes of oak reach the corners of the mouth while smooth and creamy notes fill the rest of the mouth. Slighty sweet notes of brown sugar come in at the end, but this remains a pretty simple whiskey. The finish is medium yet enjoyable. It stays somewhat peppery while smooth oak lingers in the mouth, offering a bit of a chew.

The nose is a burst of floral rye, perfectly matched by charred oak that quickly gives way vanilla and brown sugar. It is absolutely intoxicating and surprisingly offers no burn no matter much you take it in. The palate is light and oily and immediately fills the mouth with an intense burst of black pepper. It is immediately chewy and oaky vanilla fills the corner of the mouth. This is rich, full and intense, and while not exactly complex, it is those factors that make this stunning. Everything is perfectly balanced and addicting. The finish is medium long and rich, with chewy pepperiness and oak lingering. As soon as you take a sip, you're already looking forward to the next. This is remarkable, but held back a bit by the finish that ends too soon.

Middle West Spirits Michelone Reserve Wheated Bourbon Cask Strength
Bourbon — Ohio, USA
Reviewed February 1, 2024 (edited November 1, 2024)The nose is gentle, a wonderful mix of ripe fruit and creamy vanilla with a perfect amount of charred oak balance it out. The mashbill features sweet yellow corn, soft red winter wheat, dark pumpernickel rye and two row barley. The unique choice of grains really shows in the nose, as there is a soft spiciness that is somewhat reminiscent of white pepper, while the barley in the wheat offer up an immense serving of creme brulee and ripe fruit. The charred oak, along with the slightest hints of smoke, keep this from coming across as too sweet. The palate is dry yet rich, that completely envelops the mouth with a burst of pepperiness, creamy vanilla, ripe fruit and charred oak. It is deliciously smooth considering the fact that it is 63% alcohol, with the intensity of the creamy notes being enough to tame the spicier notes. This is wonderfully bold without being overpowering. This is essentially vanilla custard with oak and pepper and it is simply wonderful. The finish is medium long with a pepperiness that keeps the corners of the mouth tingling while delicious notes of creamy vanilla and oak slowly fade with every chew. This is a perfect example of high proof yet incredibly smooth whiskey. There is no age statement however and must have had a good several years for to be this intense. This is the last that I have of this particular single barrel and I greatly look forward to trying more. -
The nose is an immediate burst of creamy chard oak and corn sweetness, earthy rye immediately follows behind that is also somewhat savory - it almost reminds you of bacon fat. As it breathes, ripe fruit comes out very reminiscent of green apple. The grains are all very distinct in this whiskey extending quite the invitation to give it a taste. The palate starts off slow, it is somewhat dry yet chewy and at first doesn't show it's qualities. But after a moment, you are met with a burst of chard oak mixed with very creamy vanilla sweetness. There is a mild pepperiness behind it all but this is more delectable than in your face. While you do get just a faint hint of the fruitiness, the dry oak in the creaminess are the stars of this whiskey. This really is more like a dessert and the combination of the age in the mashbill have really hit the sweet spot. The finish is long and peppery with a lingering mixture of dry oak and creamy vanilla. The high corn content really makes a difference in this lending a lot of the sweetness and the perfect balance to the oak. This can be added to the ever-growing long list of amazing single barrels coming from this distillery, making you believe that there is some sort of magic going on out there in the finger lakes.

Four Roses Private Selection (Norfolk Whisky Group OESV 10 yr 8 m)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 30, 2024The nose is gentle but gives way to pepper, floral rise spice, dried flowers and charred oak. There is a subtle amount of vanilla and brown sugar in the background, but the floral notes really dominate the nose of this whiskey. While it is quick to say that this is very floral on the nose, there is plenty amounts of very soft ripe stone fruit. Between the floral and fruity elements this whiskey is almost tropical, but it is nicely bounced out by the right amount of oak and the most subtle amounts of vanilla and brown sugar. The palate is rich get gentle, that fills the mouth with a pepperiness that goes to the corners of the mouth while oak and vanilla cascade over the tongue. The oak knolls with the notes of dried flowers and ripe fruit, to provide for a very full and chewy taste. A lot of this is quintessential for roses and very enticing to keep coming back for another sip. This is barrel number 37-1f and while it is not the most bold four roses Private selection I have had, it is a great example of how truly good they're whiskey is. I would prefer it to be a little more intense, little more in your face for being a single barrel and cast strength but it is still undeniably delicious. The finish is long and chewy, with every chew able to coax out more pepperiness and more richness. There is a lingering spice that keeps the mouth tingling while the rest of the palate melts together invades perfectly until you take the next sip. One thing about four roses private selections, is that the experience seems to be endless. You take a while to savor the nose, you take a while to savor the palate, the finish lasts and lasts, and before you know it an eternity has passed and it's time for the next sip. -
Weller Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 19, 2024 (edited January 23, 2024)The nose is very typical of Weller - oak, ripe fruit, vanilla, a touch of leather, all coming across as being very rich. The palate is light and fills the mouth with creamy oak, ripe fruit and a slight black pepper. It is slightly chewy, staying mostly to the back of the mouth. Its not overly deep or complicated, but how full it is is where it shines. The finish is long with a lingering pepper and creamy oak that can be coaxed out with a chew. -
The nose is gentle and fruity with notes of creamy vanilla, hints of brine and smoke, and ripe stone fruit. It is very full and rich, and while almost simplistic, everything is distinct and inviting. The palate is also gentle with vanilla, oak and stone fruit all in wonderful balance. Not as intense as you might expect for its age, but part of what makes this so good is how it doesn't overwhelm. It is a great example of Irish whiskey, perfectly smooth and drinkable, with distinct flavor without being too much. The wine finish adds distinct sweetness, but in a complimentary way. A little stronger might add, but as is, without breaking the bank this is a great whiskey with some age to it. The finish is medium long with the slightest bit of lingering black pepper while fruit, vanilla and oak slowly fade.
