Knob Creek 9 Year Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed September 24, 2022 (edited September 25, 2022)The nose is leathery and oaky with hints of smoke and caramel. A slight sweetness develops as it opens up which also gives way to the slightest bit of pepper, adding a nice balance to the sweetness. The palate works its way across the mouth and into the corners, leading with a wave of black pepper. The oak and leather is rather mild, giving way to the spice. Undertones of sweet caramel are present, but ultimately this whiskey is somewhat two dimensional. Still, for the age and price point, it is very solid. The finish is medium, somewhat short with a lasting pepperiness with oaky caramel that quickly fades. -
Jack Daniel's Tennessee Travelers Sweet and Oaky
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed June 15, 2022The nose is definitely sweet with vanilla and buttery caramel along with charred oak as a kick of strong baking spices highlights its 107 proof. The spice does mellow out as it breathes really highlighting a rich sweetness. It also allows the typical banana flavor to just ever so slightly start coming through, mixed nicely with the spice. The palate is somewhat dry yet chewy as it all quickly makes its way to the corners of the mouth with the spice lighting up the palate with an intensity. Still, the vanilla and oak swirl around along with notes of caramel, all now coming across as a bit toasted in nature. After the first sip, the spice isn’t too prominent allowing you to enjoy chewing on the sweet oakiness. It definitely lives up to its name, but it’s not sickeningly sweet, it’s rather a sharp sweetness. The finish is medium long and spicy yet still chewy with sweet notes of oak lingering while spice keeps the mouth tingling very nicely. Astringent banana fades in the background which really compliments the vanilla sweetness. All in all this is quite unlike your typical Jack and while only available as a 500ml it is very much worth it.Hotel Bitburg -
The nose is spice forward with black pepper and baking spices backed up by charred oak, deep, almost burned caramel and a wave of vanilla flows over to help tame it’s harshness. The palate is powerful with a mouthful of pepper, rye and baking spices that hits every corner of the mouth with sharp, charred oak coming immediately after. There is a touch of cherry syrup that is almost astringent that chokes out the sweeter notes of vanilla. The finish is long and very peppery with the mouth buzzing from being full of spice as astringent charred oak fades in the corners of the mouth. It’s all a little too bitter to really be enjoyable but it’s a winner in terms of being a spice bomb. The finish isn’t exactly enjoyable so an invite for further sips isn’t quite there.

The nose is youthful but a nice mix of earthy rye, barley, charred oak, wing sweetness and just a touch of vanilla and caramel. It all comes together quite nicely, albeit a little softer then you would like given what lovely notes are detected. It gets more mellow and creamier as it breathes, making it more inviting. The palate is very gentle yet gives a slight kick of rye spice as a barley graininess comes in next. The mouth heats up as dry oak washes over as coming in last is faint hints of wine sweetness that come across as a bit too soft. The creaminess from the nose doesn’t translate too well here, but it isn’t exactly missed as as is, this whiskey is quite pleasing. It all eventually melds together to remind you pleasantly of dark chocolate. The finish is short to medium with a sharp and spicy dark chocolate mixed with oak and rye that fades with all else disappearing before you know it. Much potential to this whiskey with a bit more age, maybe a bit more proof. Would absolutely keep on the shelf with my only regrets being I never made a cocktail with it before finishing the bottle.

Harvest Spirits John Henry Single Malt
American Single Malt — New York, USA
Reviewed May 25, 2022 (edited May 26, 2022)The nose is vibrant of ripe fruit, straw, barley, fresh oak and the faintest hints of sweet pipe tobacco and honey. The palate is gentle and fills the mouth with barley, white pepper and fruit sweetness. There is a bit of a graininess that hints at it’s youth, however it is not off putting and actually lends to the flavor as it mixes with a touch of vanilla that shows up at the end. The finish is medium with a lingering pepperiness and a bit of a chew from the barley as a certain graininess fades behind it all. The nose bouquet makes you want to squeak like a bottle nose dolphin after a nice day at red lobster. -
Old Pepper Single Barrel Rye (Rochester Elite REBPFU)
Rye — Indiana, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2022 (edited May 26, 2022)The nose is full of ripe fruit and charred oak, balanced by vanilla, molasses, brown sugar and a floral rye spice that holds it all together. Very balanced with something different playing the dominant note with each swirl. Lovely to keep visiting and leaves you looking forward to sipping it. The palate is somewhat dry but chewy as ripe fruit, charred oak and a bit of brine work their way into the corners of the mouth. Vanilla and sharp molasses sweetness follows while being balanced by a burst of mild baking spices. It rounds out with floral rye spiciness swirling around the mouth which gives the mouth a very pleasant hotness. The finish is long and spicy with cinnamon and rye keeping the mouth tingling while charred oak cooked brown sugar fade in the background. For it’s age this is an absolutely wonderful rye at 4 years 9 months. Strong spiciness backed up by perfect amounts of oak and sweetness. This is definitely one you want to savor, but would be forgiven if all of a sudden the bottle was empty. -
The nose starts with floral rye spice and an earthiness that drowns out a bit notes of charred oak. Green apple quickly appears along with a molasses sweetness. The palate is light and airy, filling the mouth with dry, charred oak and a a great burst of baking spice and pepper. Green apple immediately follows up and mixes in as it all stays mostly to the front of the mouth. It doesn’t quite show it’s age as it’s still a little simple and aggressive with each sip leaving you wanting a bit more out of it. The finish is short to medium and a lasting spiciness but short with green apple coming together with charred oak to give it a pleasant send off, but too quickly.Rí Rá Irish Pub

Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed May 16, 2022 (edited May 19, 2022)The nose is invitingly gentle with charred oak, banana, vanilla, fresh bread and a slight hint of baking spices the more you take it in. It is very creamy and balanced and leaves much to look forward to. The palate is somewhat rich and chewy, quickly working it’s way to the corners of the mouth with creamy charred oak and a burst of cinnamon on the middle of the tongue. It’s very much a delectable cake in a glass, very simple in the mouth but so very please to taste. You won’t pick up several notes of this or that, but what it does have is in such balance and done so well that it doesn’t need to be complex to be an experience. The finish is medium with one final burst of cinnamon while creamy, vanilla charred oak trails off as you chew on it a final few times before it’s gone. Very far from your typical Jack, a great example of what their whiskey can be.25.0 USD per PourRí Rá Irish Pub -
New Riff Single Barrel Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 10, 2022 (edited August 26, 2022)The nose starts with off grassy with touches of vanilla and charred oak along with it. There are fruity notes, almost melon like, fruit but not so sweet. It is also a little earthy and meaty, but overall a little flat and indistinct. The palate is what dry and just about makes it to the corners of the mouth with a burst of earthy rye spice and charred oak. A wave of vanilla is underneath that providing a bit of a balance. There is almost a roasted peanut element to it as it breathes, but overall is just as indistinct as the nose. The finish is medium and slightly astringent with a quickly fading spiciness while the mouth keeps a dry, oaky feeling. This whiskey has some flaws and doesn't have much of an identity. For being barrel proof, the palate is surprisingly muddled. It can't quite be labeled easy to drink because it doesn't exactly give you a reason to come back to it. So drinkable, yes. But enjoyable? Very neutral. -
Basil Hayden's Caribbean Reserve Rye (Discontinued)
Rye — Multiple Countries
Reviewed May 10, 2022 (edited May 11, 2022)The nose starts with an unmistakable note of rum that is almost wine like, followed by sweet corn, creamy cereal grains that reminds you of buttered toast, then there are some faint hints of charred oak. It is very inviting to smell, though the impression is given that the rum influence might be a bit strong. The palate is thin and simplistic. Rum is immediately dominant, staying mostly to the front of the mouth while a touch of earthy rye spice hits the back. Very faint charred oak seems to envelop it, with the corn content adding to the sweetness. The finish short to medium with a lingering rum sweetness and slightly chew oakiness. The is painfully simplistic and sweet, with the rum influence definitely being too strong. Along with being 80 proof, it is also dumbed down too much to bring out the complexities that may possibly exist in the individual whiskies. A novel and very easy to drink whiskey, but falls flat when it comes to true enjoyment of a whiskey.
