Ardbeg Wee Beastie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed December 15, 2021 (edited January 15, 2022)Nose: sea salt, smoked meat, iodine, citrus zest and a hint of creaminess Palate: dark toffee, meaty peat, brine, a hint of dried fruits, smoke Finish: toffee, pepper, citrus and a big ashy peat that lingers forever The youngness of the already peaty ardbeg lends to something less refined but bolder in many ways. The peat and seawater are absolutely dominating but there is some sweetness and even fruitiness to help and round it out. I'd prefer this to the an oa even, it is definitely something worth trying for a young budget peat bomb.43.0 USD per Bottle -
Maker's Mark Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2021 (edited January 20, 2022)Batch 21-05 Nose: vanilla, molasses, peanut butter, cinnamon, maybe some clove?, Slight hint of dark ripe fruit Palate: oak up front, dominant vanilla bean, caramel, sweet cinnamon, ripe berries, freshly baked bread bread. Finish: more of maker's vanilla, brown sugar, baking spices, a lingering spicy oak, something fruity I can't quite make out. A sleeper bourbon for sure at this price, bold, complex, and available nearly everywhere it takes the classic makers mark wheated profile and adds a new depth of flavors and a chewy thick feel that is missing from the original. If you like to actually drink wheated bourbon and not just hunt overpriced and impossible to find btac this is a great buy.40.0 USD per Bottle -
Nose: caramel, vanilla bean, black cherry, a little bit of oak Palate: cherry and vanilla dominate, sweet caramel, distinct roasted nuts Finish: peppery spice, brown sugar, dark fruits and a lingering smoky oak Unsurprisingly the high proof really shows through in the hotness and chewy texture, a decidedly different experience from the 1910 but with the same sweet cherry notes. ( I have yet to open the 1897 but expect more of that delicious cherry) A very good high proof bourbon that can still be found on shelves despite the lack of age statement, it drinks more like a 100 proof.50.0 USD per Bottle

Nose: sweet dried fruit, smoke, tobacco and creamy vanilla Palate: strawberry jam, vanilla ice cream, dark chocolate, slightly savory smoke Finish: chocolate and caramel, pepper, woody smoke that lingers While I usually prefer my peat from Islay this is a pleasant surprise. The sweetness and rich smoke play well together and the mouth feel is thicker than many whiskies far above it's modest 46% abv. This is an easy choice over the highland park 12 for a lightly peated whisky or an introduction to peat.66.0 USD per Bottle

Nose: medicinal peat, burning campfire, fresh cut grass, hints of buttery vanilla Palate: big smokey peat, pine resin, honey, seawater, a bit of fruit sneaks through Finish: almost all savoury ashy smoke, brine, a touch of creamy vanilla to round it out The classic ardbeg is still the standard to best for big but rounded peat at a reasonable price. Hints of sweet shine through the savory peat add some fullness to what's otherwise a peat bomb.56.0 USD per Bottle

Nose: very light, floral notes, butterscotch and tart fruits Palate: light butterscotch, sweet and sour fruits, a bit of pepper Finish: malt forward, tart apples, some cask notes of oak and some light pepper and a hint of oak smoke lingering Overall very light in both color and with a delicate flavor, a unique experience for sure not typically found in scotch, bourbon or Irish whiskey. However the price of is simply too high, at nearly 60 USD there are simply too many other choices, even amongst Japanese whisky that already has a dubious value proposition of young nas whisky priced against very solid bottles of well aged scotch and Irish whisky.56.0 USD per Bottle

TINCUP American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Colorado), USA
Reviewed December 9, 2021Nose: very light brown sugar, some baking spices, vanilla Palate: rye bread, caramel, vanilla a faint maltiness Finish: short, tart apples, some more baking spices Low proof hurts this one, it has mass appeal as an easy drinker but nothing to write home about, the neither the malt or mgp rye show through. I doubt it would even stand up in mixed drinks very well.31.0 USD per Bottle -
Maker's Mark 46 French Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 8, 2021 (edited December 9, 2021)Nose: vanilla, oak, toffee, what I can only describe as cinnamon rolls Palate: all the makers flavors with an emphasis on toasty oak, more of that cinnamon roll, caramel Finish: dried fruits surprise me, a touch of vanilla and caramel, big bold lingering oak. Overall this is a bit heavy on the oak and does have an astringent bitter finish without the complexity an older whiskey would offer. Interesting for not much more than regular makers but I'm excited to try the cask strength makers mark for nearly the same price, I think that will be a winner for budget wheated bourbon.35.0 USD per Bottle
