Sagamore Spirit 'Sagamore Reserve' Double Oak Rye (2017 Limited Edition Release)
Rye — (bottled in) Maryland, USA
Reviewed November 21, 2021 (edited January 18, 2022)It starts out with the titular oak on the nose, but pretty gentle. Notes of cinnamon and clove follow, with an underlying sweetness. First sip brings more oak and light spice, but also chocolate and red fruit. The wood character is ever present, and the finish is spicy and lingering. A complex and hefty dram that drinks quite smooth. -
Pear and honey come first, the nose is light but fresh, with a crisp almost ‘Spring dew’ vibe. The initial sip is sweet with more fruit notes, this time leaning towards red apple and honeydew. Honey prevails through the subsequent tasting, with a touch of barrel spice. The finish has the right amount of spice without the need of water, with a dryness that keeps the crisp refreshing character of the whisky from the initial nose.
