Bowmore The Devil's Cask III "Double the Devil"
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed April 25, 2020 (edited June 21, 2020)Damn this is a very fine dram. It just got better and better. 4, 4.25 and touching 4.5. I reckon with more time it may have gone from 4.25 to 4.5 to solid 4.5. Salty, barbecue, fig, orange fruits, smokey aftertaste which warms your mouth well after the whiskey is consumed. I'd love to work through a bottle as I reckon it could be the next Bunnahabhain 18 type sleeper hit which over a year just keeps getting better. Although saying that after time open I start getting that cat pee flavour unique to bowmore which grows prominant. Still i have to call it on what I have and at $250+USD I think a 4.25 is fair. I could get nearly 3 Bowmore 18s for that price. -
Kilchoman 9 Year Old 2008 - Founders Cask Release
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed April 25, 2020 (edited June 3, 2020)Well crafted dram but nothing special. Std middle of the road Kilchoman. Sweet peat and that's about it. -
Hard to believe i'm drinking the same whiskey as whiskeyjug and worldwhiskey. It reminds me a bit of the terrible Brenne whiskey I had which had a candyfloss type flavour. This is really not good. Sweet artificial chai latte spicey whiskey. It is well balanced in terms of ethanol and flavor but man urgh I really do not like this. If you are a sweet chai latte type person you may love this not me.

Octomore 06.1/167 Scottish Barley
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed April 17, 2020 (edited June 3, 2020)After coming down off the highs of two rich Armangnacs this on first taste was disappointing however adding water really opened it up. As SH said vanilla, coconut, butter and more. It really is a lovely dram on the palate and lingers long on the side of the tounge. Now a couple of caveats. It says it's the peatiest dram...hmm that I just do not get. I suspect it's a case of measuring the peat levels of the barley then distilling it in a number of ways which miminise the end result. Although as PBM mentioned a while back there comes a point your palate really just doesn't notice additional pbm levels (I just noticed two acronyms with two separate meanings!). I think where this one falls short a bit for me is i'm not a fan of the more lighter acidic peat type drams I prefer the rich full bodied Lagavullin 16 or Laphroaig 10 / Lore approach. The aftertaste is less than the mid taste. It does carry with a nice warming glow but nothing spectacular. Still if you are a fan of this peat style I can see why you would rate it so highly it is excellently blanced and executed on the mid palate. I'd rate this 3rd after the Black Art 4 1990 and Octomore 10 yr Dialogos. 4.25 - 4.5. -
The Janneau XO I had earlier definitely warmed me to the Argmanac flavour but it and the other XO i had last night definitely confirmed my preference for younger is better in Armagnac world. This one is interesting very rich brown sugar flavor. Slightly too aged and tannic as i've found with similar aged Armagnacs but still nice job.

Whilst not a general fan of the flavour characteristics I find the XOs I've had the best of the bunch. Around 10 years seem to allow more of the distllate character to come through and not be overpowered by the wood. Embarrassing it just hit me that that's probably a factor in why I have much preferred Cognac to date as it's the XO range I usually drink. Now XO can range widely in age (from the minimum) but generally is pegged around the decade plus a bit more point these days. This is apparently a blend of 12 year up to 25 but I have a feeling the bulk is towards the younger. The flavour is a bit more earthy woody cough syrupy than Cognac which is the additional factor which leans me towards the later. A bit like bourbon in that much past the early to mid teens can often be quite overdone. This one really is a lovely drop though and has strength and depth of flavor even at 40%. Definitely my favourite dram of the night so far and probably my best ever Armagnac.

Kilkerran 8 Year Cask Strength (56.2% ABV)
Single Malt — Campbeltown , Scotland
Reviewed April 17, 2020 (edited September 30, 2021)Buttertart and lemon some noted which is a good way to sum this one up and I definitely get the later. It's a distillery I really want to love perhaps because it's (relatively) independent and from a great region but it by and large hasn't hit the mark. I just don't really enjoy the profile. The 12 year peaked at 3.75 for me and I'd like to try that again but the progress statements and this just don't float my boat flavour wise. -
BenRiach 22 year old 1994 (cask 4004) - Peated, Tokaj Cask Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 17, 2020 (edited June 3, 2020)The last Tojak cask I had (also Benriach) was a collective meh from those at the tasting night. This was an improvement solely because it is a peated Tojak. Now I won't say peat solves all the world's problems (don't want to start another COVID-19 cure rumor) but man throw some in there and it does change the equation. Now it is the thinner more acidic aftertaste burny sensation peat which i'm not a fan of but it does add character. The Tojak is definitely in the background and you could have told me refill bourbon and I wouldn't have picked the difference.
