Ah I remember when the 2001 Edition was the pinnacle of rum in my mind....wind forward a few years and it's one year later brother came up review. Ah I've definitely moved on from Rum, or at least the sweeter types. Rich xmas fruit pudding, heavy on the raisan. It's quality drop but soooo, sooo sweet. It's way more than I can enjoy so sadly I won't be finishing this drop. 4 for quality, 2 for level of drinkability. Call it a 3.5

It's an interesting drop this one. Its got a few great components but there is an underlying bitterness you get often with older whiskies. I remember the talisker 25 having a similar issue. Some note a wet, musty nose which I picked up as well. I thought it maybe brine or salt and maybe its that as well but by the end of the dram it builds and becomes almost grapefruit rind like. The other components get overpowered and so 2.25 I give this one...my least favorite Juras yet.

Mortlach Rare Old
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 22, 2018 (edited December 29, 2021)Yeah I'm with @cascode on this one. A bit ethanolly although it improves with time. Honey, nutmeg, sulphur and rubber. Typical mortlach. Not the best one I've had but I still like it. 3.5. Oh and cascode is also right about the Mortlach G&M 15. Out of 6 its the highest rated one I've had. And cheapest as well at around $80 USD. -
Glenfiddich Age of Discovery Bourbon Cask 19 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 16, 2018 (edited August 30, 2018)Hmm, not a bad drop once I let it settle. Slightly burnt caramel, creme brulee, gingerbread, vanilla. Got a nice after taste as well. I could definitely drink more of this, although not at the $120 price. I've quite enjoyed this series. I tried the Tullibardine murray after this and I think that needs to go down a notch and this I'll give. 4.25. -
Half a K, the W Mk, the five hundy or just plain 500 is how many tastes I've subjected my poor liver to and recorded on this site over the last couple of years. I'm very excited as I heard from a reliable source
via another reputable source that I'm due a fabulous prize. A car maybe or maybe to save Mikael the effort of shipping it over to NZ a trip to Scotland. Anyhow whilst I wait in suspense the drop at hand. Slightly unfittingly not a whiskey but instead an NZ vodka with a bit of sentimentality given I used to drink this a bit when younger. One of the true NZ pioneer distillers. Its called 42 below because it's 42 degrees latitude below the equator, made with NZ wheat and NZ volcanic water. Cheap as well at under $30USD for a large 1000ml bottle. Sadly its now owned by Bacardi but still made the same way. It's a nice drop. Melow, mild viscosity and nice to drink straight...as I did whilst waiting for my plane to depart. 3.5 rounding up for VFM and sentimentality. I will wrap up this review with a poem entitled 'A little boy waits........for a car he suspects may not be coming ' -
Tanqueray London Dry Gin (47.3%)
London Dry Gin — Scotland
Reviewed August 14, 2018 (edited August 30, 2018)I've had a few straight gins that aren't to bad this is pure mixer territory. Coy sweetness and juniper...nothing more. 2 -
Appleton Estate Signature Blend Rum
Gold Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed August 14, 2018 (edited September 14, 2018)Rough and sweet sums this one up. And free...probably the only good thing about it. I bought a bottle of the 21 once and it was very very bad...weird white floaty stuff. I was donated with a possible health warning..no one died or went blind from memory. 2.
