Pulteney 2006 11 Year Small Batch (Cadenhead's)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 24, 2018 (edited June 14, 2018)No. 3 on the Pulteney journey. Water definitely bought it to life. Nice vanilla but not a lot going on. 3.25 -
Old Pulteney 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 24, 2018 (edited October 22, 2019)In my fav bar for my last night down in ChCh for the forseeable future. It's a bit of an old Pulteney fest. This plus a cask strength 11 year Cadenhead and a 11 year connoisseurs choice. For the standard 12 I'm with scotchharding on this one. Niceish, mild vanilla and honey but little heft. 3.25 I'll give it. -
Springbank 12 Year Cask Strength
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed May 23, 2018 (edited December 16, 2018)I'm with Richard M on this one. Not one to drink straight. The alcohol just overpowers the flavour. I put in liberal amounts of water and then some and it opened up beautifully Viscous honey, caramel maple syrup type thing going on. 4.25. -
When I first tasted this bourban I was like this is good, def a 4. But three longer I drank the wheels started falling off a bit. I liked the spicy rye but then it became slightly so so, bit rough and the thing that did it for me was it just became to sweet. Still its only $40USD here which is cheap 3.5 I'll give it.

Jura Diurachs' Own 16 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed May 23, 2018 (edited August 18, 2020)Sweet, viscous honey and a bit of caramel. Nice drop but relatively uncomplex and little aftertaste. 3.25 -
Ailsa Bay Single Malt Whisky
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 20, 2018 (edited October 21, 2024)Yeah I'm with Telex on this one dry bitterness makes it an unbalanced dram. It's like they made the cut to late when they were heading into the tails phase. When I saw the 3.2 rating I thought uh oh and yeah I am not a fan. I had to wash my mouth out with Talisker 57 North to get the taste out. Its like a younger thinner batch of Ledaig which went slightly wrong. I couldn't even finish it in the end. 2 - 2.5. -
The terms sweet, pleasant and inoffensive comes to mind with this one. Nice sweetness, a bit like a mellow cheaper bourban in some ways. But it has the sherry component. Its good but has little flavour complexity and a bit boring. I didn't even bother finishing it in the end as it wasn't worth hanging around for as I moved on to another event. 3.25

Ledaig 2005 Hermitage Wood Finish (Gordon & MacPhail)
Single Malt — Island, Scotland
Reviewed May 16, 2018 (edited May 22, 2018)I was falling back in love with Ledaig but this one again has me thinking...eh maybe not. A work colleague I was drinking with preferred it over the 10 year Ledaig because he liked the rough rawness. Me not so much. Definitely got the finish coming through but quite bitter sharp and jagged. 3.25 -
Longrow Red 11 Year Cabernet Franc
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed May 16, 2018 (edited December 9, 2019)Wow this is a great dram. The 17 year I had a couple of months ago was ok but this was stellar. Really rich red wine flavour powers through and is well balanced by the over 55% abv. 4.25 - 4.5 for me.
