Jack Daniel's Bonded Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed July 8, 2022 (edited July 31, 2022)Banana, marshmallow fluff, cinnamon, oak. Pretty easy to enjoy for the price, especially if you like the JD banana note, which I do. And even better when you find it for $17.99. It's likely to vie for top of the class in the $30 and under range. Seems to normally be priced a little higher than WT101 and OF100 (and in a smaller bottle), but it's in the same ballpark. I also don't see how this doesn't make the Single Barrel Select obsolete.18.0 USD per Bottle -
Yellow Spot 12 Year Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed July 7, 2022 (edited July 16, 2022)This is a substantial improvement over the Green Spot. The fruit of the Green is here, along with more caramel, a little spice, and greater overall depth. As good as this is, for $100+ this doesn't seem like a great value. Thanks to @ContemplativeFox for the generous sample. -
Honey, green apple candy, vanilla. Good flavors, would probably enjoy this a great deal more with a respectable proof. At @Anthology 's Costco price of $30, this would be a good buy, but at the price around here of $65+, I fail to see the value. Thanks to @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington for the generous sample.

Knappogue Castle 14 Year Twin Wood
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed July 7, 2022 (edited April 15, 2023)The flavors are a little different, but my experience of this is pretty similar to the tasting I had of Powers 12 year, in that it has a great nose and finish, but the palate is a let-down. Here we have fresh cut Granny Smith apple, tropical fruit, sugar cookie, and something floral on the nose. The palate is mostly vanilla, maybe a little grassy and thin feeling, but then the finish comes back with the fruit, caramel, and some nice oaky spice. The higher-than-normal proof for an Irish is appreciated most on the finish. Overall not bad, but wish it had more flavor on the palate. The finish keeps making me think this is better than it is, but then I have another sip and am underwhelmed again by the palate. Still, probably a decent value at $50 for a 14 year old single malt Irish whiskey, and bottled at 46%. Update: nearing bottle kill, I’m giving this a bump. It emptied itself pretty quickly. Good Irish and good value.50.0 USD per Bottle -
1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 4, 2022 (edited August 13, 2022)Apple, pear, vanilla, toasted caramel, peanut. It tastes like what I think bourbon should taste like, and it's good. Deep thoughts, I know. At the same time, and this may be coming from a little bourbon burnout, but it's not especially exciting and probably not one I'll go out of my way to find. Thank you to @ContemplativeFox for the generous sample. -
Lagavulin 12 Year (2020 Special Release)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed July 1, 2022 (edited September 11, 2022)Lemon drop, peat smoke, hearty burn going down. Really pleasant dram, and the cask strength is nice. It's quite good, but it doesn't blow me away. Was really looking forward to this one, so maybe expectations were a little too high. All the same, it was a joy to be able to try. Thanks to @ctbeck11 for the generous sample. -
Straight corn whiskey aged 5 years in tequila barrels. On the nose, lime rind, saltwater, caramel corn. The palate brings salted caramel, smoked agave, slightly underripe watermelon, lemon meringue. Caramelized agave finish? I wasn't sure how much I liked this on the first couple pours, but it's really starting to work for me. It's a very different profile with the tequila flavors fairly prominent, but if you're patient with it, as the sweet corn flavors emerge it shows a really interesting balance with the salty vegetal tequila notes. At the price of $60 I think it's a good value for the unique flavors it offers. Also, 5 years in the Texas heat is a lot of age for a Balcones release.

Black Bull 12 Year (Duncan Taylor)
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed June 24, 2022 (edited April 15, 2023)For $36, it's a solid blend. Lots of fruit, apple, pear, lemon, cherry, with some vanilla, honey. There's also a little bit of a sparkling white wine-type impression I get from this. Not a lot of depth, and it's a little on the hot side. But I wouldn't hesitate much to pick it up again if looking for a fruity Speyside blend with a higher proof.36.0 USD per Bottle -
Starlight Single Barrel Huber's Old Rickhouse Rye Finished in VDN Barrels
Rye — Indiana, USA
Reviewed June 23, 2022 (edited April 12, 2024)This particular single barrel is a Bourbon Lens selection, bottled at 52.4%, 5 years old, 11 months in a vino de naranja barrel. The white wine and orange peel are evident on the nose, along with bourbony notes of caramel and vanilla. The palate brings orange, clove, cinnamon, vanilla, mint, and mild herbal notes. The finish leaves a little too much bitter orange peel. At the sale price of $50, I think this was a great buy, but at the regular price of $70, the value diminishes a bit, although it's still a well done craft whiskey with decent age and a unique finish. This is the first whiskey I've tried from Starlight, and it's a strong first impression. I'd be interested to try some others. 3.5 stars.50.0 USD per Bottle
