Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 30, 2021 (edited April 15, 2023)I've become particularly fond of barrel proof whiskies, so this is a natural fit for my tastes. And, this doesn't disappoint. 129.2 proof. Rich, full flavored bourbon (er, Tennessee whiskey). Banana creme brulee. Really going to enjoy this bottle. Update: as others have noted, this has improved quite a bit since opening several months ago. Possibly deserves a bump in score.59.0 USD per Bottle -
Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 12, 2021 (edited October 8, 2021)Very fruity on the nose and palate, with some spice coming through on the palate. Peppery finish. I really enjoy this, although I'm not sure it's worth the upcharge from the single barrel - I paid about $16 more for this than I can find the single barrel here. If this was more like 110 proof, I think I might be more inclined to repurchase.55.0 USD per Bottle -
Wild Turkey Bourbon 101
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 11, 2021 (edited September 24, 2021)For the money, I don't know that there is anything better. I thought for a hot minute that Early Times BiB was a competitor, but this takes it, at least for me. Some sweet, some oak, some spice, and enough punch at 101 proof - it's just a solid well-rounded bourbon, and only $22 a bottle. I do think I prefer the 101 Rye, but this is great too.22.0 USD per Bottle -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2021 (edited July 13, 2022)This is decent bourbon, although nothing in particular stands out about it. I wish it had a little more kick, but it holds it's own against sometimes harder-to-find and often marked-up bourbons in the general price range (looking at you Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Weller Special Reserve). Has a bit more spice on the finish than those, which I think makes it a little more interesting. Decent, and easy to find at a fair price.32.0 USD per Bottle -
Early Times Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 19, 2021 (edited March 24, 2022)Note this is sold by the liter, so price per bottle was adjusted for an equivalent 750 ml. First impression: I can't find much to dislike with this, especially at the price. I may like this better than any other sub $30 bourbon, and a number of others >$30. Pretty classic bourbon notes, nice proof, a smidge of peanut. It's pretty sweet, and it's not complex or especially interesting, but remarkably good for a simple bourbon at $23/liter. OGD114 is a recent winner in the budget bourbon category, but I might like this better. Tempted to go higher on the rating for the value. In the running to sit with WT101 Rye as my house bourbon and rye. Update: subsequent sips have found this to be perfectly serviceable for the price, but a little boring. I've been finding myself using it as a base for bourbon blends. I found that a 50/50 mix with WT101 Rye was a nice combo.17.25 USD per Bottle -
Blanton's Original Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 12, 2021 (edited July 13, 2022)Wasn't sure what to expect, as I've been disappointed with other allocated BT bourbons. There's a lot of similarity with regular BT and Eagle Rare, but better. The nose is richer, there's more oak on the palate. I'm not disappointed at $60 - this is good and the bottle is cool, but ECBP is a significantly better bourbon for only a few bucks more. I would definitely be disappointed at secondary market prices.60.0 USD per Bottle -
Chattanooga Whiskey Cask 111
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 9, 2021 (edited April 15, 2023)The first couple nips of this I found to be unbearably hot, even though I prefer my whiskey with some bite. A few weeks later I find this to be much more tolerable and pleasant. Not sure if the batches vary significantly, as I've seen others say the proof seemed well-hidden in this whiskey. The taste is not traditional bourbon. There's a malty-ness and strong chocolate note that I don't typically find in bourbon. I'm liking this better a couple weeks after opening. Very pleasant but unconventional for a bourbon. -
Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 8, 2021 (edited September 26, 2023)Picked this up on vacation in California, since Willett does not distribute to Oklahoma. First impression: much fruitier than I imagined. Loads of cherry syrup, orange, somewhat medicinal. The finish is really nice - brings a burst of spices and the more classic rye notes. Strong like but not love at this point, but I suspect my impression will change some over the course of the bottle. Update: subsequent tastings have made me appreciate this more. The combination of fruit and spice make this stand out from some of the other ryes I've tried.60.0 USD per Bottle -
Oak, leather, vanilla, caramel, and a little cherry in there. Fairly thin. For as difficult as this is to find, at least in Oklahoma, this is somewhat disappointing. It seems an upgrade over Buffalo Trace, but not substantially. At MSRP, it feels like a good buy, but not worth a lot more. Also, it turns out I prefer the Dickel BiB to this, although the most recent release was a little more expensive than this.33.0 USD per Bottle
