George Dickel 13 Year Bottled in Bond Tennessee Whisky (Spring 2007)
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed July 26, 2021 (edited December 23, 2021)Appears to be an unpopular opinion, but my first impression is I like last year's 11 year better. This version is smoother and oakier, but I prefer the brightness and fruit in the younger version. The 11 year has more of the infamous Flintstones note, but for me is more a feature than a flaw. Maybe it has something to do with growing up in the 80s. If the vitamin note turns you off about Dickel, you'll likely prefer this year's version. Overall, I don't know that the two are different enough to warrant a different rating, but I give a slight nod to the 11 year. -
Barrell Seagrass
Rye — (bottled in) Kentucky, Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 16, 2021 (edited October 14, 2021)My palate was confused with the first sampling of this - I thought it tasted like a punchbowl mix of whatever alcohol was leftover from last night's party. Some rye, some rum, some sweet wine, some apricot schnapps. With subsequent tastings, it's all come together for me, and I would now count it among some of my favorite whiskies. It's sweet and it's hot, but the rye gives a great balance so it's not just a hot sugar bomb. Of course they're not giving this away (it's pricey), but I give Barrell credit for doing something really interesting and unique. Update: 2nd bottle not as good as the first. Seems like the rum finish is lacking on this batch. More bitter and hot than the first bottle I had. -
Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed July 10, 2021 (edited July 20, 2021)Smooth, sweet and spicy. Good rye. One of the standouts from whiskey night, which turned out to be largely rye night. -
High West Rendezvous Rye Ed Mell Edition (2021 Release)
Rye — Utah, USA
Reviewed July 10, 2021 (edited April 15, 2023)Whiskey night sample. Wasn't expecting much based on recent reviews, so may just be a case of lowered expectations, but I thought it was pretty good. Nothing in particular stood out from a small taste - fairly standard rye profile. Better than WT 101 Rye, but not worth 2+ bottles of the WT. -
Peerless Kentucky Straight Rye (24 Months)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 10, 2021 (edited January 3, 2023)My favorite among assorted whiskies at whiskey night. Not much rye on the nose or palate for me - seems more like a bourbon with rye on the back end. Surprisingly good for 2 years. Not sure it's worth the price of admission, but was happy to get a taste. -
All you could want in a 25$ bourbon. Old school no frills label, hot, cinnamon, rye spiciness. Peanut. Dryer, not especially sweet - if you like your bourbon to whisper sweet nothings in your ear, look elsewhere; but if what you need is a firm talking-to by a slightly crotchety but wise old granddad, this is your bourbon.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 2, 2021 (edited July 27, 2021)Restaurant pour. Tastes like a watered down barrel proof, which is to say, pretty good.
