Glenfiddich IPA Experiment
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 3, 2021 (edited January 8, 2022)Whiskey night tasting: this didn't really work for me. The IPA finish kind of tasted like soap to me. -
Widow Jane 10 Year Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed October 3, 2021 (edited October 25, 2021)Whiskey night tasting: I thought this was a nice bourbon blend. The bottle says it's sourced from KY, TN, and IN. Better than average, although it sounds pricy for what it is. -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 3, 2021 (edited July 13, 2022)Whiskey night tasting: keeping with my tendency to not love sherry-finished scotch, I thought this was just okay. I think there was some good whisky in there, but it also had a sulphury funk that I didn't love. I assume that's coming from the sherry finishing, but what do I know. I'm not even sure Macallen makes whisky that they don't age in sherry casks, but I might like to try it if they do. -
I see the similarity to Pikesville, but the extra smidgen of proof and extra age of the Pikesville seems to produce a much more well-rounded and better whiskey. More than it seems like it should. A lot of sweet, and very little of the classic rye herbalness shows up here, likely due to it's "barely legal" mash bill. Although similar mash bill WT101 Rye seems to be less sweet and have more of a classic rye profile. However, keeping the perspective that this is a 20$ bottle of whiskey, this is very good, and I think you're getting an incredible value. In this range I have a preference for the WT101Rye, but for those who like a little more sweetness, the Rittenhouse would be a good bet. Sugary cinnamon candy sweetness. For whatever reason, I can't currently find Old Forester 100 Rye around here, but would be interested to see how it stacks up to these two.21.0 USD per Bottle

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 30, 2021 (edited April 15, 2023)I've become particularly fond of barrel proof whiskies, so this is a natural fit for my tastes. And, this doesn't disappoint. 129.2 proof. Rich, full flavored bourbon (er, Tennessee whiskey). Banana creme brulee. Really going to enjoy this bottle. Update: as others have noted, this has improved quite a bit since opening several months ago. Possibly deserves a bump in score.59.0 USD per Bottle -
Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 12, 2021 (edited October 8, 2021)Very fruity on the nose and palate, with some spice coming through on the palate. Peppery finish. I really enjoy this, although I'm not sure it's worth the upcharge from the single barrel - I paid about $16 more for this than I can find the single barrel here. If this was more like 110 proof, I think I might be more inclined to repurchase.55.0 USD per Bottle -
Wild Turkey Bourbon 101
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 11, 2021 (edited September 24, 2021)For the money, I don't know that there is anything better. I thought for a hot minute that Early Times BiB was a competitor, but this takes it, at least for me. Some sweet, some oak, some spice, and enough punch at 101 proof - it's just a solid well-rounded bourbon, and only $22 a bottle. I do think I prefer the 101 Rye, but this is great too.22.0 USD per Bottle -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2021 (edited July 13, 2022)This is decent bourbon, although nothing in particular stands out about it. I wish it had a little more kick, but it holds it's own against sometimes harder-to-find and often marked-up bourbons in the general price range (looking at you Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Weller Special Reserve). Has a bit more spice on the finish than those, which I think makes it a little more interesting. Decent, and easy to find at a fair price.32.0 USD per Bottle
