Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2019 (edited July 15, 2019)Not anywhere close to my favorite bourbon, but it's a great dessert whiskey or just everyday drink. It has a flavor profile full of apple, caramel, vanilla, and spice. It'd be great with a slice of apple pie and vanilla ice cream. It's incredibly drinkable straight even at 101 proof - it's hard to believe that it's such high proof. I think that it'd be great on ice or in certain mixed drinks as well as drinking straight. It would also be great to share with family during the holidays. It's a great value at MSRP. -
Kentucky Owl 11 Year Rye (Batch #2)
Rye — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed July 10, 2019 (edited December 30, 2020)Very robust rye whiskey. Spicy rye on the palate with maraschino cherries and vanilla. I get a bit of caramel as I sit and drink the glass over time. I feel like it needs 20-30 minutes to breathe before all the flavors truly arrive. Great smokey notes and barrel char that persist in the very long finish. The finish in this whiskey is superlatively long - it persists and lingers for hours in my mouth if I don't drink anything else or eat something strongly flavored - excellent spice, smoke, and barrel char. My only complaint about this whiskey is the price. It runs about $200 in my market. I feel like it should be more in the $120-130 range, but it's fantastic if not a bit too expensive. -
Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye
Rye — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed July 7, 2019 (edited December 25, 2020)I prefer it with a little water. It has a peppery bite with pleasant rye flavor. Vanilla, oak, tobacco. This is on the milder side of ryes, but it's accessible and easy to drink at any time. Because the rye flavor is a bit milder, there is a lot of subtlety that emerges behind it that would otherwise be overpowered. There is a cracking-fresh cereal grain flavor and some mellow barrel char in the finish, that might be easily overpowered by the rye. I feel like it needs to breathe a bit before all the flavors really come out, but it's enjoyable when they do. It's a really pleasant slow sipping whiskey. I've had better ryes at the same price point(though most are hard to find), but none were this easy to kick back and relax with on a Sunday afternoon. -
Spicy cinnamon with dry wood - slight cedar note. Cinnamon/alcohol burn. Corn. More cinnamon. A bit of a funky/musty flavor, but not bad. Feels thick on the tongue. Dry, woody finish, but more dry than oaky. Definitely interesting. A minty flavor emerges late in the finish, maybe with a hint of cocoa powder.

Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 27, 2019 (edited July 19, 2019)The nose is vanilla and spice. Very woody at first. Long, dry finish. It takes a while for all the flavors to develop- this is a subtle bourbon. There is a strong sweet rubbing alcohol like flavor from swishing it around my mouth. Amidst this, there is a grassy and floral flavor - I get strong rose petals that come out over time. There is a sweetness, maybe apples on the tip of the tongue. I also get marshmallow. -
Old Forester 1897 Bottled In Bond
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 26, 2019 (edited September 23, 2019)Great, robust whiskey. It ticks most of my preferred boxes when it comes to how I want a bourbon to taste. Not perfectly balanced, but it's a solid B-plus. This might become my new go to. -
Balvenie The Week of Peat 14 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed June 26, 2019 (edited July 26, 2019)It's pretty good. I get some vanilla on the nose - it's definitely got smoke. The body is good, this has a good amount of smoke, but it's not a heavy Islay peated - the smoke is more purely smokey, and it definitely doesn't have the Islay coastal flavor. It's definitely a peated Speyside - there is a sharp peppery bite to the smoke, followed by caramelized malt- maybe some raisiny notes? The caramel and the smoke seem to fight in a delightful way during the long finish. Has some nice honey to it. Dry oak emerges at the end. I like this, it didn't impress me at first, but it's grown on me. I wouldn't seek it out, or hunt for it, but if I saw it on the shelf during a routine visit to the liquor store and there weren't other limited releases, I'd grab a bottle without hesitation.
