Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 15, 2019 (edited August 17, 2019)Nose of fruit, peanut shells, musty notes. More peanut shells on the palate. Very earthy, peanuts, burnt marshmallows. -
Decent basic rye, not particularly complex. Decent spicy rye flavor with a bit of ethanol. Rye finish that lingers for a bit. It's not anything special, but it's perfectly drinkable. It's a little thin on the palate- I prefer all my whiskey on the oily side. Would be better if it were higher proof. Probably good to mix if you want something with a solid rye flavor shining through your mixer.

Nice mild rye flavor, a bit of spice with sweet vanilla finish - pleasantly smooth at 100 proof. This is not a complex whiskey, but it's a really pleasant rye for a fantastic price. This is a wonderfully affordable daily drink. Extra points for the very affordable price. Better than most readily available whiskeys in the $20-30 price range.

Woodford Reserve Straight Malt
Other Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 14, 2019 (edited August 17, 2019)Definitely an interesting whiskey. The nose is a bit musty with, vanilla, oak, and spice. The palate has cocoa, oak, nuts, and lots of malt. The finish is not overly long with more nuts and dry wood. All in all, this whiskey is on the drier side, probably due to being malt instead corn based. -
Laphroaig Càirdeas 2019 Triple Wood Cask Strength
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 3, 2019I didn't add any water, drinking this straight at 59.5%. Smells like smokey barbecue and sherry. Typical Laphroaig flavor, the smoke is front and center, if a bit mellowed in this release. I taste the coast, seaweed, iodine, salt, black pepper, but there is also a lot of wood, which should come as no surprise in a Triple Wood. The finish is long with ash, wood, but also sherry sweetness. The sherry stands it's ground - it's just the right amount - you can taste some dates/nuts/raisins, but it's well integrated and not excessive. This is a well balanced, robust, but sweet Laphroaig. -
Wild Turkey Master's Keep Revival
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 1, 2019 (edited September 5, 2019)The sherry on the nose is very evident, and it tricked my brain into thinking that I might have grabbed a scotch by mistake. There is something that reminds me of a sweet, fruity, cakey dessert. On the palate, I get a strong rye spice from the start that lingers through the finish. Along with the rye, I get cream and definitely some shortcake. There is some heavy mintiness, which is a quality that I normally don't like, but it works a lot better with the cream and dessert flavors. This is a nice whiskey- not necessarily something that I'd want to drink all the time(nevermind the price and availability making that an impossibility) but it's a nice treat. I'd buy this again despite being well over $100 a bottle. -
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 29, 2019 (edited February 3, 2020)Very fruity nose that actually reminds me more of bourbon than scotch. Apples with a bit of spice - some caramel. The palate is really woody, which is not surprising from something calling itself "Three Wood". There is definitely some raisins and cocoa- some apples and spice. The wood lingers into the finish. The cocoa is a major flavor component that persists through the dry wood. It's got some spicy burn that rests somewhere between cinnamon and pepper. This isn't necessarily what I'm looking for in a whiskey, but I can appreciate it and I can understand why someone might love this. -
Nose is honey and smoke. A bit of coastal brine. On the tongue it is honey, some smoke, crackling tingling black pepper. Long tingling salt and pepper finish. The honey runs throughout. The finish is quite long. I can definitely taste the Talisker and Caol Isla. All and all, a very pleasant whiskey at an affordable price point. I only wish that it was bottled at 92 proof - I think that would make it perfect.
