Russell's Reserve Private Barrel Selection
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 11, 2026 (edited March 12, 2026)8 year CN-D, floor 4 Libbey, neat, rested 15 min Nose: cherry, floral, caramel, musty? Palate: oak, musty, sour/dry, baking spice, a little caramel Finish: baking spice, pepper, oak Overall: as much as it pains me to say… this bottle just isn’t very good. The nose wasn’t great and it didn’t get better as you drank it. I do enjoy picking up these bottles but the normal single barrel seems to be superior. Affordability Rating: 1 out of 5. This bottle was $80 I think! Better off going with a differernt store pick or the normal single barrel. -
Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: vanilla, caramel, fruity? Palate: smooth, sweet, caramel, cereal Finish: light, little baking spice, brown sugar Overall: solid, classic, easy drinking bourbon Affordability Rating: 4 out 5. Good, versatile bottle for under $30. I’d take OF 100 proof over it though.

Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: vanilla (a lot of it too), toffee, floral Palate: vanilla, sweet, caramel, almond or subtle nuttiness Finish: burnt sugar lingers, baking spice, vanilla again Overall: very tasty bottle. Not overly complex but a lot of vanilla and elevated caramel flavors. I like it a lot! Affordability Rating: 3 out 5. I’ve only seen it at $70 which is an ok price. Wouldn’t go over $90 but would snag a bottle at $60 or below.

Smokeye Hill Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Colorado, USA
Reviewed March 4, 2026 (edited April 13, 2026)Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: Boozy, sweet vanilla, oak, faint caramel Palate: hot, sweet, oak, leather Finish: Wow! This lingers for a while. Vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate covered cherries, Charleston Chew may be the best way I can describe it. Overall: Awesome pour, by far the best “Colorado” bourbon. It drinks hot, you’ll feel the proof but gets better over time. The finish is incredible and lasts for quite some time. Affordability Rating: 4 out 5. This competes with Stagg Jr. and ECBP at $70-$90. I’d argue this is better than the couple of Stagg Jr. bottles I’ve tried. Some ECBP I do prefer though as I find them more smooth. -
Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: vanilla, maple, little ethanol Palate: brown sugar, maple, leather Finish: vanilla, baking spice, pepper/spicy Overall: Good, no complaints. Solid bourbon that is acceptable neat and great for cocktails. Affordability Rating: 5 out of 5. The 100 proof helps and this just hits all the notes I’m looking for at a great price.

Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: very pleasant, bready, honeysuckle, pound cake, vanilla Palate: rich, caramel, sweet Finish: short for me, oak, spruce/pine, hint of brown sugar comes back late Overall: great daily sipper, tastes above average and really enjoyed the nose. Excited to try the full proof wheated and single barrel wheated. Would be curious to blind this with Weller 12 year. Affordability Rating: 4 out of 5. At $35 to $40 this is well worth it. One of the better wheaters on the market.

Glencairn, neat, rested 15 min Nose: burnt sugar/caramel, candied apples, more ethanol than expected Palate: baking spice, red hot candy, sweet/syrup Finish: mild vanilla, oak, not a ton going on here for me. Overall: Fairly underwhelming given the hype around this bottle. Tastes perfectly fine but nothing overly special. Happy to buy a bottle at MSRP if I see it. Affordability Rating: 2 out of 5. Worth picking up to try once. I’ve seen bottles at $90 or $100 which is ok if you’ve never had it before. Otherwise I would pass on this if above $55
