The Real McCoy 12 Year Rum
Aged Rum — Barbados
Reviewed December 15, 2019 (edited December 28, 2019)Fruit and vanilla on the nose, oak and petroleum on the tongue. A good mouth swirl brings back the vanilla and fruit with a hint of caramel. Down the hatch, the petrol makes a return appearance, with an accompanying burn. Nothing drastic, and all fairly pleasant, though perhaps not as smooth or satisfying as the three year. -
In every dram I get partially crushed peanut shells, tobacco at the butt of a cigarette, and some shoe leather, more from around the heel than the laces. It’s not entirely as unpleasant as it sounds - at least on the crest of the tongue. But by the time it hits the back, and certainly through the finish, I find myself glancing absently toward the exit of this “super trendy” dive bar and drifting toward who I’m gonna call after this. Maybe Elijah is still up...

Some green apple and charcoal on the nose, highlighting the more classic vanilla nut underneath. The palate brings in more peanut brittle and burnt caramel, and has a nice, oily mouth feel. But the finish, while of decent length with a little pepper on the back of the tongue, has a lot of gasoline burn that really turned me sour. Might do better with a little more time in the glass or with a drop of water to cut the flames down a bit.

Rabbit Hole Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 11, 2019 (edited November 24, 2019)Ooh, boy, lots of flavor. On the nose, there are solid amounts of cinnamon and oak, but I also got some fruit mixed in, some green apple and maybe a little bitter cherry. On the palate, the cherry popped a little more for me, as did the oak, but the taste was otherwise as advertised by the nose. The finish was both long - with a slight hint of spicy black pepper - as well as all too inviting for a second sip. Much, much better than I anticipated overall.
