Thomas S. Moore Chardonnay Cask Finished Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 28, 2021 (edited November 13, 2021)NOSE: Oak, caramel, slightly herbal baking spice, dried dark fruit, vanilla frosting, a bit of nuts and peanut brittle. The spice slowly grows bolder as it opens and brings a touch more fruit with it. I can’t say I’m really getting much in the way of wine notes on the aroma and it just reminds me of their bourbon. PALATE: Oak, caramel, baking spice, dried grapey fruit, vanilla, roasted nuts and a slightly earthy herbalness. There’s the wine. It really pops on the palate of this Thomas S. Moore Bourbon Chardonnay Casks, but I don’t get a nice, integrated, delivery. The wine and the bourbon are fighting more than they’re complementing. FINISH: Medium -> Grapey sweet, oak, nuts, and a slightly metallic off-note fades to a slightly off wine note. -
Castle & Key Restoration Rye 2020 (Batch 1)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 27, 2021 (edited July 22, 2021)NOSE Caramel, fruit, oak, roasted corn, toasted nuts, biscuits, baking spice and some light chalky vanilla. Fairly basic aroma, with far less of a spicy kick than expected. This is a mellow rye, which isn’t a bad thing, just worth noting. PALATE Herbally rye spice, oak, roasted corn, toasted nuts, baked apples, cinnamon, caramel and some light bits of vanilla and clove. Castle and Key Restoration Rye is much spicier on the palate. Less sweet as well with more rustic and earthy tones coming through and it picks up more of that “typical” rye profile. FINISH Med-long -> Herbal, baking spice, oak and fruit with a peppery pop. -
Blue Run 13 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2021 (edited June 23, 2023)Good whiskey, garbage marketing. NOSE: Oaky, deep dark fruit, roasted nuts, spice mustiness, vanilla cupcakes, toffee, spice touch char and citrus. Oaky and heady aroma deepened with spice and dark sweets. Blue Run Bourbon smells wonderful… this is bourbon. PALATE: Caramel, oak, dark fruit, leather, hazelnut, spice, vanilla cupcakes, toffee, spice, char citrus, earthy and herbal with a bit of menthol on end. So much complex earthiness here, the Blue Run Bourbon palate is just plain good. Warm and inviting, it carries a bit more darkly sweet notes than the aroma. FINISH: Long -> Oak, herbal, citrus, fruit, char, spice in a long warm fade that turns to cocoa and mint. -
Sagamore Spirit 'Sagamore Reserve' Double Oak Rye (2017 Limited Edition Release)
Rye — (bottled in) Maryland, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2021 (edited July 15, 2021)NOSE: OAK, sticky dried dark fruit, baking spice, cocoa, herbal, Twizzlers, char and slightly nutty notes. Holy cow this is dense… DENSE I SAY and crazy darkly fruity under the heavy oak. It’s lovely just to sit and sniff. PALATE: OAK, sticky dried dark fruit, baking spice, cocoa, herbal, Twizzlers, char and slightly nutty notes sit as a carbon copy of the aroma but with deeper oak and dark fruit notes. Seriously, oak just pummels through this Sagamore Spirit Double Oak, but the supporting notes are strong enough to band together, balance it out and stabilize the whiskey. FINISH: Long -> Oak, dark fruit and spice fade out warmly and dryly. -
Sagamore Spirit Distiller's Select Tequila Finish Rye
Rye — Indiana, USA
Reviewed May 21, 2021 (edited March 3, 2023)NOSE: Spice, banana peels, mango, herbal, citrus, grainy sweet, oak and I want to say there’s a touch of agave sweetness, but it’s so light it could be psychosomatic. Still, there’s a nice balance between sweet and rustic that even if the agave is imaginary here it’s still a pleasant experience. PALATE: Oak, spice, caramel, agave, honey, nuts, baking spice, mango, pepper and leather. There is a light tropical touch to it but on the whole, the Sagamore Reserve Tequila Finish palate is a bit more rustic with a very pronounced agave note floating through. Tasty. FINISH: Long -> Oka, baking spice, agave sweetness and tropical fruity sweetness fade. -
Sagamore Spirit Distiller's Select Manhattan Finish Rye
Rye — USA
Reviewed May 20, 2021 (edited July 28, 2021)NOSE: Vermouth, cocktail cherries, copper, spice, leather, sugar and a touch of oak. Just so overwhelmingly sweet. It smells like a pre-made cocktail, as good, high quality, pre-made cocktail, but a cocktail nonetheless. PALATE: Vermouth, cocktail cherries, copper, spice, orange peels, angostura, leather, sugar and a touch of oak. If you handed me a glass of this Sagamore Reserve Manhattan Finish on ice and told me you’d whipped up a cocktail I wouldn’t question you for a second. FINISH: Med -> Sticky sweet with some bits of oak, bitters and orange peel. -
Coalition Rye Sauternes Barriques Finish
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 14, 2021 (edited May 15, 2021)NOSE: Juicy fruity sweetness, baking spice, wood, copper, almonds, roasted nuts and oil. This is a pleasant aroma with a solid fun and fruity delivery I’m actually enjoying. PALATE: Juicy-fruity sweetness, raw-craft-woodiness, baking spice, cocoa, banana chips and some cocoa and copper. Don’t like the Coalition Rye Sauternes Barriques quite as much here. That raw-crafty quality kicks up a lot more and starts to take over. FINISH: Med -> Woody, grainy, winey sweet drifts out evenly. -
NOSE: Dark fruity sweetness, dried corn, woody oak, citrus peels, baking spice, touch candy sweetness and cocoa. It has a juiciness to it that's equal parts winey and darkly fruity and they merge in a syrupy-sweet way. It's unique that's for sure. PALATE: Tart dark fruit, woody, biscuity, baking spice, dried orchard fruit, anise and cocoa with a touch of citrus. It has some of that raw/woody craft essence to it, but it gets covered by the dark winey notes enough to not dominate. FINISH: Med -> Woody, darkly fruity, olde candy and spice in a disjointed fade.
-
NOSE: Nutty, coffee, fruity and a touch malty and coppery. It smells like what its, coffee mixed with Jameson, and that's awesome. I was worried it would be cloying. PALATE: Coffee, nuts, fruit, malt, whiskey spice and a touch of copper. Jameson Cold Brew tastes like what you hope/want it to and I'm loving that. I'm so glad it's not weighed down with sugar. FINISH: Long -> Coffee, fruity, nuts and a coffee fade
-
NOSE: Honied fruit, apple pie spice, copper, brown sugar and a touch of gummy bears. Soft and subtle, it has a sweet and round aroma that isn’t very expressive; having trouble getting much out of it. PALATE: Honied fruit, malt, banana, copper, spice and some biscuity notes. Soft, basic and unassuming, Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey is coming through like a pretty standard Irish Whiskey. FINISH: Short -> Banana, spice and copper quickly dissipate.
