Nose has the richness and balance of a decadent sweets shop with the sharpness of a brisk coastal breeze and the warmth of BBQ smoke all blended harmoniously together; Palate fits the same profile, but the more it opens the more there is to explore within the layers – it’s comfortingly complex; Finish is the lightest part, coming off like a xeroxed xerox of the palate.

Aroma is waxy sweet taffy and lemon cake wrapped in smoky coastal notes with a touch of apples – it’s a tad muted and water doesn’t help open much; Palate has a sweet coastal bonfire profile and I love the light mineral notes coming through, but again it sits a tad light and doesn’t carry quite as much depth as I’ve experienced in some of the past releases; Finish is a nice slow extension of the palate.

Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed December 28, 2020 (edited December 29, 2020)Aroma has a warm, fruity, malty profile with a strong layer of decadent dessert/pastry notes that lend some buttercream frosting characteristics making it a a loverly fun aroma; Palate comes through similarly to the aroma but with more apples and more depth to the malty notes; Finish is warm and fruity fading to oaky char. -
Waterford Organic Gaia Edition 1.1
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed December 24, 2020 (edited December 25, 2020)Aroma is waxy with a strong buttery frosting note paired with a strong note of apples and that same Farmer’s Market aroma I got in the Rathclogh with tinges of toffee and notes of minerality; Palate has the Malt showing up heavily and starts to remind me of my beloved Roughstock but not as complex; Finish holds the true promise of what this will become with age and maturity and hits a nice pace of earthy/farmy, sweet and fruity. -
Waterford Rathclogh Edition 1.1
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed December 23, 2020 (edited June 9, 2021)Aroma is a tad waxy and gets a touch citrusy as it opens, bringing along some earthy grain and overripe fruit notes that remind me of closing time at a farmer’s market in the summer; Palate is a little more confusing and I’m not totally sure about what’s going on under the malt, toffee, citrus and sweet and nutty note – there is this odd over-roasted-touch-metallic note that isn’t good… but it’s not terrible either; Finish fades nicely to a warm nutty note and is the best part for sure. -
Waterford Dunmore Edition 1.1
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed December 23, 2020 (edited November 23, 2022)Aroma is a touch waxy, but the dominant character is a butteriness that stays consistent and prevalent and brings with it a nice balance to the earthier and fruitier notes; Palate is a bit more raw and malty, but retains that buttery feeling though it’s sweeter here giving it a buttercream frosting character; Finish is soft, sweet and subtle as it drifts out sweetly. -
Benriach The Smoky Twelve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 23, 2020 (edited April 11, 2021)Aroma carries a hint of sherry-like sweetness that almost disappears under the light peat but works well with the dried fruits and malty notes; Palate is the waxiest of the new core and sits heavy and warm with a similar profile to the aroma; Finish is nice, but kind of muted. -
Benriach The Smoky Ten
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 22, 2020 (edited January 3, 2024)Aroma is rich and alluring with a mix of earthy-malty-peaty notes and fruity-dessert-sweet notes combining and blending nicely; Palate carries an added herbal undertone, but on the whole, comes through a bit muted compared to the palate; Finish picks up the most peat but stays rather fruity. -
BenRiach Curiositas 10 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 22, 2020 (edited December 24, 2020)Aroma has a coastal, saline-like, quality to the peat which works well with the lighter and brighter fruity and dessert notes that sit below it; Palate comes through a bit immature like it’s aged more around 5 years than 10 and gets a touch of that spirity minerality to it making it come through like a 5-year-old Islay; Finish is elegant and fruity with just the right amount of smoke. -
Benriach The Twelve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 17, 2020 (edited February 3, 2021)Aroma is sweet and fruity with a strong malty presence and light bits of spice that slowly rise and add to the complexity; Palate is good and darkly sweet with a malty core and a richer waxier delivery than the 10; Finish is nice and easy with a touch of wax at the end.
