Benriach The Original Ten
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 17, 2020 (edited February 3, 2021)Aroma is a tad waxy, not Clyenlish level, and has a nice earthy-malty character that sits alongside a warm fruitiness that comes through like a gourmet fruit candy; Palate is rather basic but is good and fruity with a strong malty presence that’s super easy to sip and enjoy; Finish is warm, soft and fruity. -
High West High Country American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Utah, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2020 (edited December 15, 2020)Aroma is softly fruity and heavily malty with light notes of those gummy orange slices candy as it opens and has a slight roasty note to it like almost-charred-mallows or light coffee; Palate has a beautifully farmy character to it I’m enjoying that gives it an earthy tone and helps offset the young, but not crafty, notes; Finish is warm, fruity and farmy with a touch of rustic charm. -
High West American Prairie Bourbon Barrel Select (Black Label)
Bourbon — Utah, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2020 (edited June 15, 2022)Aroma is sweet and heavy with a solid oak character but a bit of water adds a butteriness to it that takes this to the next level and makes me want a room that smells like this in my house – it’s warm and inviting like fresh baked goods; Palate hits the same, but picks up a bit of menthol as it opens and, with water, a larger dose of brown sugar and cocoa wafts through on the heavy spice currents; Finish is sweet and oaky and spicy and a wonderful experience to end with. -
High West American Prairie Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in Utah), USA
Reviewed December 7, 2020 (edited February 1, 2021)Aroma is not super expressive, but standard and true for what’s there – this is a simple oaky and sweet aroma with a good bit of spice that shows why people like bourbon; Palate carries the same from the aroma with an odd, but not unpleasant, earthy vegetable oil note I sometimes get in these releases; Finish is soft and warm with an oaky spicy fade that makes the next sip all the more easy. -
Four Gate Batch 7 River Kelvin Rye
Rye — Indiana, USA
Reviewed November 19, 2020 (edited December 25, 2020)Aroma is like the best cherry pie ever… but more – it’s deep and dark running from dark fruit to dessert sweets with the entire baking spice rack sprinkled throughout and laid on a heavy oaken plank; Palate isn’t quite as deep as the aroma, but it’s no slouch in the complexity department and pulls in a lot of the same darkly fruity and sweet notes with some solid oak, but less spice and more of a rye bread character; Finish – is elegant and warm in its rustic fade. -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2020-02 "Boston Batch"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 22, 2020 (edited December 25, 2020)Aroma is crazy complex and pulls in a massive pillar of peanut butter fudge everything else revolves around – the spicy, the oaky, the rustic, the sweet, everything butts up against the PB fudge to balance and deliver complexity; Palate is an intense delivery of the aroma with the same notes charging through and keeping the PB fudge status quo but again balanced and delicious; Finish starts PB fudge and then slowly fades to oaky-spicy-herbally-nutty awesomeness. -
Aroma is lively and full of interesting darkly sweet and spicy notes that transcend the regular white in leaps and bounds; Palate strolls the same path but picks up some extra oakiness and a pronounced oily peanut brittle note that fits perfectly amongst the spice and baked sweets; Finish is as pleasant as can be and ends with this warm apple pie note that feels homey and inviting.

In the Aroma that raw corn, touch nutty, TN style shows up heavily and I love that it does so while not taking over and allowing more of the oaky and spicy KY and IN show through as well; Palate brings more of the oak and darkly fruity and spicy notes while the TN takes a bit of a back seat, but doesn’t disappear; Finish comes through dark and sweet.

Barrell Rye Batch 003
Rye — (bottled in) Kentucky, Multiple Countries
Reviewed October 9, 2020 (edited July 29, 2024)Aroma has a delicate-dessert-meets-heavy-rustic-spice profile that’s fun and interesting but doesn’t quite cross into WTF territory – it could use more dark and oaky notes to balance out the lighter fruit notes; Palate gets a bit oakier and some bigger caramel and herbally spicy notes arrive as it opens; Finish is a long sweet fade sprinkled with oak. -
Woodinville Straight Bourbon Port Cask Finish
Bourbon — Washington, USA
Reviewed October 9, 2020 (edited September 27, 2024)Aroma is port is dominant making it super sweet but the oak attempts to balance it out, and almost manages to do it, but it ends up needing help from the candy and spice notes… but still falls just shy; Palate runs the same trail but pulls up some touches of roasted nuts and citrus, however, here the port is even more dominating and the whiskey borders one noted; Finish starts cloying but the fade-out to oak and smoke ends up making it not terrible.
