Method and Madness Single Grain Finished in Virgin Spanish Oak Casks
Single Grain — Ireland
Reviewed November 29, 2018This review is for the M&M Single Pot Still bottle (aged in French Chestnut barrels). But that bottle isn't listed on Distiller, so this is the closest option. The French Chestnut barreling is a crazy standout. Possibly the best and most unusual Irish Whiskey I've tried. Can't even describe the notes and complexity of the finish. Demonstrates that it's well worth experimenting with various other kinds of wood for aging, and that some really exciting spirits are coming out of Ireland these days!80.0 USD per Bottle -
Bruichladdich Black Art 1992 05.1 Edition 24 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed November 28, 2018Just outstanding. Delicate, complex, and one of the best Bruichladdich expressions I've had. Easily worth tracking down a bottle... especially if you can pick it up in the UK where it's cheaper than in the US.260.0 USD per Bottle -
Booker's Rye Whiskey Big Time Batch (2016 Release)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited January 15, 2020)Stunning rye. One of my all time favorites. First time I've ever agreed with the critics on "whiskey of the year" as well. Tried this for the first time at a bar down in Texas before the hype hit. Was stunned by it--and had the chance to share it with a friend who had never tasted a rye before... it is just incredible whiskey. Goes down like it's half it's proof.... however, it does need a while to open up. Second time I had it was from a freshly opened bottle, and it wasn't nearly as good. Opens up well and needs a few weeks/months of being open to fully reach it's potential. This compares favorably to others of the all-time great ryes I've tried--the Saz 18, Thomas Handy 2013, Willett special releases like Iron Fist and Velvet Glove, old High West 21 year bottles, etc. It deserves to be in the same company, and that's the highest praise I can give it. There are other, better cask strength ryes out there--but none I know of that can be bought for any remotely reasonable sum of money. And I know that Booker's rye, at a secondary of $800, is similarly crazy. But at the ~$300 retail, it's worth it, and a far cry better than most other special release ryes of the past few years.330.0 USD per Bottle -
WhistlePig The Boss Hog IV: The Black Prince
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Vermont), USA
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited December 1, 2018)I'd give this a 4.0+ for taste, knocked back for the crazy MSRP. I gave this very high marks when I tried it at the SF Whiskey Fest in 2017. I've had it a couple of times since then, and it stands up well when it's the only CS rye of a lineup... but when you start comparing it head to head with other rich ryes, it loses some steam. I did this side-by-side with the Booker's Rye, and it was clear the Booker's is head and shoulders above the Black Price. (Freudian slip on the typo, but decided to leave it.)500.0 USD per Bottle -
WhistlePig Old World Cask Finish Rye 12 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Vermont), USA
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited June 17, 2019)Really enjoyable. Opened to celebrate an anniversary, and it was a good special occasion rye. The sweet notes from all the barrel finishes marry well and give this a richness and complexity on the finish. I wish this were higher proof, and a little bit richer finish, but those are minor quibbles. Worth the price when you can find it around the $100 mark, since there's not much to compare it to in that range. More than that and it starts to lose it's value proposition.115.0 USD per Bottle -
WhistlePig The Boss Hog V: The Spirit of Mauve
Rye — (bottled in Vermont), Canada
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited December 1, 2018)This is an amazing whiskey, but the price is just crazy. Better than the Black Price (the only other Boss Hog release I've tried)... I'd agree with another reviewer who says it's not worth the price premium over the 15 year... also not worth the premium over many of the 10 year store barrels. I'd give it a 4.25 on taste, but knocking it down a bit for the $500 retail. In that range, you're better off looking for some exceptional ryes in the secondary market.500.0 USD per Bottle -
Abraham Bowman Sweet XVI Bourbon
Bourbon — Virginia, USA
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited January 27, 2020)Gracious, this is delicious! Hides its proof almost entirely. Great rye notes and spice. The best thing I've had from Bowman by far, and compares favorably to BTAC bottles. Sadly a very limited release, but a friend was kind enough to share a taste. Well worth tracking down a dram.75.0 USD per Bottle -
Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed November 28, 2018 (edited November 29, 2018)Much more complex, compared to the standard Jameson. Still not a great whiskey, but interesting. Don't taste IPA notes specifically, just a deeper, richer flavor than the standard. Worth the $5 premium for sure over the standard, but still not a great value in Irish whiskey. Take something like the Bushmills Black Bush or Teelings Small Batch -- both are far better for a similar price.35.0 USD per Bottle
