Westward Sourdough
American Single Malt — Oregon, USA
Reviewed October 15, 2020 (edited December 8, 2020)Bright, sour and spicy. Delightful. Notes of fresh peaches, mango, honeydew, chocolate, vanilla and nutmeg. I can taste the sourdough bread. Really interesting and different and like all of westward’s whiskeys it’s tastes a like dessert without being overly sweet. Balanced. -

Nose: Medium peat smoke. Hickory, bacon, blackened BBQ, vanilla bean, light aroma of rubber. Action figures. Flavor: Heavier peat and smoke than the aroma would lead you to believe. Mesquite bbq, pineapple, bold green apple, bitter dark chocolate, butter and burnt caramel. Oak and earth notes, leather, rum and a hint of cinnamon. None of sea or iodine of the best Islay scotch. More reminiscent of Laphroig 10 or Caol Ila 12 than a selection from Ardbeg or Lagavulin. A great combination of a Oregon and Scotland. Water dilutes it too much. A pour with a stone cools it and brings out the sweetness and fruit notes but dulls the complexity. Prefer served neat. My favorite American whiskey but then again, I love Scotch and this is very close to a scotch.55.0 USD per BottleHollywood Beverage

Nose: Intense peat smoke with iodine. Stone and tropical fruit, sherry, vanilla and Lapsang Souchong tea. Bandaids. Flavor: Rich, sweet, complex, smooth. Smoke, iodine, peat. Brine, pineapple, vanilla, orange zest, cherry, rubber, barley-malt. back of the throat is buttery, salt, pepper, and smoke. Finishes long, warm and peppery but still sweet. Balanced. Water cools the heat and brings out Indian curry notes. A stone brings out molasses, vanilla, sweetness. Both slightly dull complexity. Prefer this one neat. The finest whisky(or any spirit) I’ve ever tasted and not sure it’s really close. 4.75/5 to leave room for a surprise contender but I doubt that’s happening.85.0 USD per BottlePortland

Nose: chocolate, black cherry, allspice, bananas foster Flavor: Bright bitterness and slow burn cools to chocolate, coffee, orange zest, oak and malt. Finishes like a smooth chocolate stout. Pleasantly sweet but not overbearing. Balanced. Beer notes more apparent on a stone.89.95 USD per BottlePortland
