Pike Creek 10 Year Rum Barrel Finish
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed April 15, 2017 (edited September 22, 2020)The nose is light, sweet. On first sip I picked up brown sugar or caramel quickly. Nicely balanced with the splash of some rye. Not too peppery though. Perhaps some dark fruits, but very little. I was surprised by the smooth feel. The nose was leaning toward boozy, but there was no burn in the sip, nor the finish. The finish was a bit short and I was left again with the sugary notes. A good desert whisky. -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2016-01 "Booker's Bluegrass"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 8, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Really enjoying this with my cousin. We added water and it really opened up. Smooth, full, a bit spicy, lots of vanilla and oak notes. Hmmm, better put a few of these on the shelf while the price is OK. -
J.P. Wiser's Union 52
Blended Malt — Ontario, Multiple Countries
Reviewed March 25, 2017 (edited December 16, 2019)This is probably my favourite whisky this year. The balance between sweet caramel and light fruit with oak spice and a hint of smoke is near perfect. The nose is a little more toffee and caramel, but the palate brings out some rye spice and strong oak flavours. The finish is long and has a bit of citrus that comes along with the oak bitterness and lingering sweetness. I liked this when I first tried it, but as I move through the bottle this has become a wonder (edited) -
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 19, 2017 (edited December 31, 2019)Peat and smoke are well balanced by the wood notes. As you adjust to the volume of peat here, there is lovely sweetness too, that really comes out as you breathe the finish for hours! Love this Scotch, and I can often find it at an affordable price. It is always on the shelf, a house whisky. (edited) -
J.P. Wiser's Double Still Rye
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed February 19, 2017 (edited April 14, 2017)The nose is light, a little sweet. It is smooth drinking, but young so the first few sips are a little raw. Spicy, citrus and some sweet honey maybe. Really fantastic for it's price point and good enough to sip straight. I find it opens up a bit on ice. -
I was surprised how much I enjoy this experiment by Jameson. The nose is light and mild, but the tase or mouth feel is rich and smooth with malt charachter. I can't find the hops others taste, but maybe it is there in the finish. The finish is short though and moves on quickly. Overall a refreshing whisky. I would enjoy this with ice on a hot day. Edit: coming back I still enjoy this, even more than Black Barrel or Crested. This had become a house regular Irish. (3.5 stars)
