Masterson's Straight Rye Whiskey 10 Year
Rye — Canada
Reviewed July 24, 2017 (edited December 30, 2021)My wife managed to pick up a bottle of batch PSA3, aged in American oak. Easily one of the best whisky's I have tasted. Certainly this year. A complex, spicy, balanced Rye. It bursts with flavour and I still remember the first sip and the involuntary "woah" . If you can find this batch from this year, it is a must try. -
Bold and spicy. I found the nose grabbed me and pulled me in with honey and maybe dried orange zest. The body was full, just what I want in a Rye. Lots of pepper, some oak balance, and a dry finish with a little sweetness that lingers and makes me think of the next sip. A bit young I guess, but I cannot explain it's lower score here. It is an excellent Rye. (3.5 stars)

This is a rye forward Bourbon. I believe the mash bill is 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% barley. Right from the start the nose catches me. Spicy, floral, and a bit boozy. The astringency on the nose might put some people off. Taking a sip continues my first thoughts. It is peppery in the mouth, a little thin, but still sweet. A lighter sweet more like honey than corn syrup. The finish is drying and a bit longer. Sipping a few pulls my mouth in a bit.

Tomatin 12 Year Bourbon & Sherry Casks
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 11, 2017 (edited July 28, 2020)There are hints of great flavours here. honey in the nose, apricots in the palate, and lots of wood in the finish. Unfortunately they do not come together well. Some medicinal over tones, and something I can't place keep this from being great. There are better offerings out there. -
Forty Creek Confederation Oak Reserve
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed July 4, 2017 (edited January 11, 2020)A light, sweet whisky with a bit of rye pepper to keep you interested. I love the story of this whisky, and wish it came together a bit better. The nose is slow to develop but vanilla and wood come out. the taste is sweet corn and very smooth on the tongue. Thankfully there is is some balance with pepper or deeper wood. I think it is the finish that leaves me confused. It seems to burn and the leave an almost bitter taste. Good over all, just not as great as it's story. -
A wonderful way to celebrate Canada's 150! I enjoyed this smooth whisky on July 1st and picked up toasted sugars, a bit of vanilla and balanced oak. I generally find Wiser's a bit sweet, but this expression had a longer finish and and fuller mouth feel than a few of their other offerings I have had. At its current price, an excellent, sipping whisky!

A smooth, lightly toasted whiskey, easy to pick up vanilla and a subtle sweetness like honey. I pick up a little burn or alcohol forward feel that settles with a bit of water, or a few sips in. It is worth sipping as the flavors of oak and the malt from the wheat come out if you let it roll over your palate. It really grew on me over the night.
