Shackleton Blended Malt
Blended Malt — highlands, Scotland
Reviewed August 28, 2021 (edited December 12, 2021)I really enjoy the nose on this whisky but the palate slightly lets it down. Having said that, for the price you pay it’s a really decent drink. I would love to try this bottled at 46% rather than 40% as I suspect that would make all the difference - but as a historical recreation it’s a brilliant idea and well-executed. Nose. Lemon, vanilla, butterscotch and cereal. There might be some brine as well. Palate. Lacking a bit of depth, but there’s some apple, honey and smoke. Finish. The fruit disappears quickly, but there’s a nice peppery smoke that lingers. -
Smokehead Islay Single Malt
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 12, 2021 (edited January 10, 2022)Nose. Smoke, sweet vanilla and a hint of sea salt. Palate. Much more subtle than the nose suggests and very smooth, but lacking complexity. Smoky brine, creamy vanilla and white pepper. Finish. Medium length. The smoke and pepper linger, along with some slight rum spice. -
Nose. Vanilla, lemon zest and light smoke. Palate. Sweet vanilla, honey, sea salt and light smoke. This isn’t particularly peaty. Finish. Medium length; peppery warmth and lingering smoke. This is a much lighter Islay than something like Laphroaig but an easy and enjoyable drink. I’d happily use it to introduce someone to Islay whiskies.

Auchentoshan American Oak
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed August 10, 2021 (edited November 17, 2022)A light, easy drinking lowland whisky. Caramel, vanilla sweetness on the nose and palate, and a touch of spice in the finish. It’s not particularly complex. -
GlenAllachie 12 Year Pedro Ximenez Sherry Wood Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 7, 2021 (edited December 15, 2021)Nose. Rich dried fruits; sultanas, raisins, Christmas cake and Sherry. (If you let it breathe a little you also start to get banana.) Palate. More of the fruit along with a big hit of ripe banana. Finish. Rich and warming, but not particularly long. The banana hangs around and there’s some floral honey which is then replaced by a hint of citrus.
