La Mauny V.S.O.P.
Rhum Agricole Vieux
La Mauny // Martinique
La Mauny hails from the island of Martinique, producing rhum agricole alongside more widely known brands like Clement. Per the company, the minimum age is four years, with an average of six. The distinctive shape of the bottle brings to mind rum vats--and stands out on shelves. Although not explicitly stated, it’s highly likely this rhum is aged in French oak. It’s unfortunately not currently imported into the U.S.
Rhum Agricole VieuxRhum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice that has been aged in oak in barrels not to exceed 650 liters. In Martinique, aging requirements are at least 3 years for a VO designation, 4 years for VSOP, 6 for XO, and at least 6 for vintage rhums. Hors d'age is aged between 8-12 years.

"The rhum’s color is surprisingly dark and inviting. Nosing it is a joy, with aromas rarely found in non-agricole rums. The French oak impact here is strong, making for an experience quite different from an unaged agricole. The palate is a dancing, constantly changing blend of tart fruits, wood, spices, and a hint of musty barn. A wonderful, relatively inexpensive rum for savoring neat, worlds different from the classic pot-stilled English-style rums aged in American oak."
