I dig the aesthetic of Old Grand-Dad more than the actual drinking experience, which is a little rough for me. I could like it more as a kind of drugstore barrel proof, but seeing it routinely at $30 now—it’s a hard pass for me.
All you could want in a 25$ bourbon. Old school no frills label, hot, cinnamon, rye spiciness. Peanut. Dryer, not especially sweet - if you like your bourbon to whisper sweet nothings in your ear, look elsewhere; but if what you need is a firm talking-to by a slightly crotchety but wise old granddad, this is your bourbon.
First smell was a charred barrel note, followed by fruiter and sweeter nosings - while never loosing it’s “dark” quality (don’t know how else to put it). It’s hot on the tongue for sure, but still retains a sweetness on the side of the tongue. The next sip brought much more complexity and almost a maple quality. The finish is very alcoholic, and brings back the charred barrel scent of the first nose. A bold bourbon. Be prepared!
Nose: peanuts, maple, honey, vanilla, oak spice, caramel popcorn, orange dreamsicle, brown sugar
Taste: peanuts, honey, caramel, cinnamon, brown sugar, citrus
Can easily compete with $50 and $60 bottles. It's a tie between this and Buffalo Trace for the best budget bourbons.
