Old Grand-Dad 114 Bourbon

2 oz. pour neat. Nose of peanut shells, cinnamon, and oaky tannins. Rye is featured on the palate with pepper and spicy phenols. Great value for a higher proof bourbon. Works well as a mixer in an old fashioned and straight on its own.

Classical bourbon notes oak caramel with some heat, not too complex finish but a great pour and bang for buck

Review #354 Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium-dark amber. Nose: Caramel and apple with a hint of pepper. Palate: Clove and cinnamon with some pepper on the tip of the tongue. Finish: Medium length with a good amount of heat. Splash: Some sweet fruit notes appear. Overall: 8/10 - It's been almost 3 years since I last reviewed this. The whiskey didn't change, but did my palate change? Surprisingly, no. This hits the same way as it did years ago. At under $35 it's a sleeper hit, so I rated it one point higher than before.

Nose: Leather, Baking Spice, Caramel, Butterscotch, and Hot. Also slight Oak and Light Bread. Palate: Creamy, Pepper, Vanilla, Rye Spice, and Proof. Also slight Caramel, Oak, Cherry, and Funky. Thoughts: Old Grand-Dad 114 was a bottle I initially approached with some skepticism, but it quickly proved to be an enjoyable surprise. Its dark, rich flavor profile is complemented well by the spice, creating a balanced and structured pour. The higher proof stands out and makes it especially effective as a mixer. I wouldn’t consider it an easy neat sipper, but it still offers strong value for the price. While I appreciate many of its qualities, it’s not a bottle I consistently reach for.
