Panama Red Overproof Rum
Panamonte // Panama
There’s no shortage of Cuban-style, Panamanian rums available from PILSA, but the Panamonte brand was among the first to arrive on the market. The Panama Red expression is the (slightly) overproof entry into their lineup. Although no age statement is given on the bottle, reports have it as a blend of rums up to five years, aged in ex-bourbon casks. Note: This is not currently available in the U.S.
Gold RumRum that is often aged, but can also just have caramel-coloring added to provide color. No specific type or size barrel required. No set time required for aging for most countries with a few exceptions.
"Despite its name, the rum presents as a darkish gold in the glass, a welcome relief. The nose is a blast of vanilla and oak, in line with the wood-forward Cuban-style. The first sip explodes with butterscotch flavor – this is an overproof after all, so it’s less diluted. The mouthfeel is thick and lush, although it fades fairly quickly. Despite the relatively high proof, there’s relatively little harshness, making it a decent entry-level sipper for hardcore rummies."
