Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon

Rare breed is one of those bottles that definitely tastes and feels like its a more expensive bottle. Unfortunately it seems like this hidden gem is not really hidden as it is slowly becoming more difficult to find and the prices have seen to gone up. This is quite a step above WT101 and holds its own against other BP products. Bottled at 116.8 proof, this one is quite the hitter. Nose has plenty of ethanol and other notes like cinnamon and caramel. Palette is slightly nutty, oaky, cinnamon, and butterscotch. Finish is medium length with a slight burn that follows all the way down to your stomach as you swallow. Overall quite smooth. Definitely a staple on the shelf.

Nose: baking spices, cinnamon, vanilla, wood Palate: hot tamale, vanilla, strong earthy flavors, sweet woods/tobacco Finish: very warm Kentucky hug, sweet lingering finish A luxury step up from the wild turkey straight bourbon (college football team religiously shot until incapacitated). Get the hints of the classic, but the complexity and the high proof makes a really nice sipping bourbon.

A- picking up dark fruits and caramel. Corn presence is strong. Sweet sweet sweet. Even picking up a slight melted chocolate note here. T - This one never ceases to amaze me. It really is so damn good for the price. Dark fruits, caramel, and vanilla frosting all nicely balance. Getting more chocolate notes on the finish. It drinks more like a dessert to me. Very smooth at the proof and really well balanced. O - this a “must have” on deck at all times bourbon for me. Especially if you are just starting to dabble into the brown juice world. 4.35

Nose is buttered toast, a pine/evergreen hint, oak. Fairly muted actually. Palate is nuts, maraschino cherries, candy corn, caramel, bitterness at the back of the tongue, heat from the ABV, some vanilla. Mouthfeel is maple syrupy. Finish is long and slightly numbing. In a blind tasting I’d peg this as barrel proof from the numbing sensation and not the ethanol taste. Overall experience is a sweet nutty flavor for me. Not overly complex, but certainly not boring.

Bourbon fans, stop chasing those overpriced and allocated bottles. Instead, buy Rare Breed. It’s an amazing bourbon at an affordable price (less than $50 in most areas) that’s widely available. Drink it neat, drink it over ice, drink it with water. Tons of flavor whichever way you like it. It’s great and better than most whiskies twice the price.
