New Spirits Roundup – December 10, 2021By Amanda Schuster
Happy Friday, spirits fans!
Well, it’s beginning to look a lot like boozemas, but there are still some interesting late-year limited releases to share with you this week.
Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door is knock, knock, knocking on your bar cabinet door with the release of Heaven’s Door Bootleg Series Vol III. In Scotland, Diageo taps into its stocks with Orphan Barrel Muckety-Muck 25 Year from now-shuttered Port Dundas distillery. And Nicole Austin continues building momentum for Tennessee’s Cascade Hollow Distilling with Cascade Moon 13 Year Rye.
More details on these whiskeys and more, plus some tequila news below. Merry sipping!
Heaven’s Door’s Bootleg series is a tribute to the famous rarities recordings by Bob Dylan, and is likewise a portfolio of rare whiskeys and special blends. The 2021 Bootleg Series expression is a cask-strength 13-year-old Kentucky Bourbon finished in Spanish Vino de Naranja Casks.
The Bootleg Series Vol III comes in a handmade ceramic bottle featuring Bob Dylan’s painting, Sunday Afternoon. Also, each bottle is individually numbered, with an accompanying leather journal.
“I really look forward to each year’s Bootleg release, as it’s our opportunity to introduce some of our rarest and most innovative whiskeys,” said Heaven’s Door Master Blender Ryan Perry. “The Bootleg Series Vol III allowed us to experiment with our first ever Kentucky bourbon release, one of which was aged for 13 years before our Vino de Naranja barrel finishing — pretty amazing! We’re really pleased with the final result, I just wish we had more bottles to offer all our loyal fans.”
Bottled at 60.6% ABV, Heaven’s Door Bootleg Series Vol III is limited to 3,949 bottles. It has an SRP of $545 and is available at ReserveBar.com and select retailers nationwide.
Orphan Barrel Distilling Co. Debuts Muckety-Muck 25-Year-Old Single Grain From Ghost Distillery Port Dundas
Diageo’s Orphan Barrel Whisky Co. has announced the second single grain Scotch whisky release: Muckety-Muck 25 Year from Port Dundas Distillery, which has been shuttered since 2010.
Port Dundas distillery was also once home to a piggery with hundreds of pigs. For this reason, the name of the whisky is a tribute to the most prized swine, Muckety-Muck. Furthermore, there are six variations of the bottle label featuring him in Scottish tartans, varying by color scheme.
The limited edition expression is bottled at 45.5% ABV. It’s available in limited quantities at select spirits retailers nationwide with an SRP of $249.99.
Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. General Manager and Distiller Nicole Austin has released Cascade Moon 13 Year Rye. The final liquid is her own selection of barrels which began maturation at Cascade Hollow Distillery in 2012.
“The Cascade Moon series is a collection of some of our most unique and rare whiskies. Each release has its own unique story behind the innovation and mastery of its making,” said Austin. “With this release, I’m excited to offer drinkers a beautifully aged rye whisky unlike anything else we’ve released in the series.”
The 13-year-old whisky is bottled at 100 proof and will start rolling out in Tennessee, Texas and California for a limited time at an SRP of $299.
Laphroaig has announced the third installment in the Ian Hunter Series with its latest release, Book Three: Source Protector. This Laphroaig bottling is a 33-year-old non-chill-filtered single malt whisky that was fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels.
The Ian Hunter Story will consist of five annual releases honoring the storied early 20th century Laphroaig distillery manager. Ian Hunter: Book Three is a tribute to Hunter’s commitment to preserving the Kilbride Stream and its environs. He is responsible for overseeing the distillery’s conversion to steam energy as a way of preserving the water source.
“The third book in our series pays homage to Ian Hunter’s unparalleled dedication to protecting Laphroaig’s lifeblood — its water source,” said Simon Brooking, Beam Suntory’s Global Scotch Ambassador. “The 33-year-old whisky matured in ex-bourbon barrels is a unique peated single malt whisky, making the release a wonderful addition to Laphroaig’s rich collection.”
The limited-edition whisky is bottled at 49.9% ABV and is available at specialty retailers for an SRP of $1,250.
