Old Elk Straight Wheated Bourbon
Bourbon — Colorado , USA
Reviewed July 1, 2021 (edited October 25, 2021)Very smooth. Nose is caramel and pepper. Flavor is rich and sweet, with an initial note of vanilla, followed up with a hint of tartness on the backend. As I sit and mull over my last sip, I detect a buttery flavor. It is quite good. To think that I bought it because of the cool bottle. This one will go in my collection. A pipe full of a nice aromatic tobacco would be a delightful companion to this bourbon. -
My first experience with “the green fairy.” I was experiencing an anise overdose, but if prepared in the traditional method with a sugar cube and ice water, it’s decidedly more complex than that. I’m not saying it’s my favorite spirit or anything. I’d rather drink a Manhattan made with the crappiest of the bottom-shelf bourbons. But it has piqued my interest in the spirit, and I look forward to trying other varieties of absinthe. The lengthy ban on this spirit was utterly ridiculous. It’s just booze, people!

I don’t know anyone who drinks this by itself. I regard it more as an ingredient for cooking, like vanilla extract. It is very orange, with a deep, robust flavor, a candy-like sweetness, and a viscous consistency. Served neat, it puts me in mind of cough syrup. It would probably be better on the rocks, and better still with a bit of club soda. Personally, I think it is best served as an ingredient in the orange sauce with Crepe Suzette.

Sauza Signature Blue Silver Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited July 11, 2021)I’m generally unimpressed with tequila as a standalone beverage. Yes, some of the top shelf stuff is interesting, I suppose, but as a class of spirit, I usually relegate it to being drowned in lime juice and ice whilst I try to impress some bikini-clad vixen with some drunken, rambling tale of youthful indiscretion, in hopes that she might not find me too repellant, and offer me the opportunity make her acquaintance in a more personal setting... Anyway, tequila, for me, is a utilitarian spirit, a means to an end. That end, more often than not, being me waking up in woods, naked with a splitting headache, and a confused look on my face. This particular tequila, serves that purpose nicely. It it perfect in margaritas and other beverages of that ilk. And, it’s made with 100% agave, a fact that sets it apart from tequilas of a similar price point. This tequila will continue to perpetuate my foolish misadventures, until the day I decide to grow up.
