George Dickel 13 Year Bottled in Bond Tennessee Whisky (Fall 2005)

Reviewed June 29, 2020Smell: Buttered popcorn, oak, and vanilla. Taste: Like syrup and butter on cornbread. Soft and simple. The ending is like getting smacked with a vanilla bean. It is fun to drink, but lacks complexity and spice. -
Appearance- lightly colored and thin. Nose of pear, lavender and acetone. Sweet and herbal. The taste is of apple pie; baking spaces and fruits are evident. There is not much wood of the barrel except for a slight complexity with a hint of leather and tobacco on the finish. It’s not a particularly complex spirit but it is soft and well-rounded. Honestly, I think it’s rating here is much harsher than its bite.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 21, 2020 (edited June 15, 2020)Sticks to the glass and lingers after a quick swirl. The color is of orange marmalade. On the nose there is oak, caramel and cedar. After sipping I get werthers candies, spice and oak. A touch of cinnamon on the finish, accentuated with the more drops of water I add. It is sweet and sticky. The aftertaste is squelched by the alcohol and tannins. This pour gets points for getting me into more barrel proof bourbons. But it isn’t as complex or balanced as I once thought. Nevertheless, a good whiskey. -
Not a thick pour, but not thin either. A golden yellow that turns burnt orange around the edges. The nose is of pear, crystallized honey, lemon and elderflower. The taste is sweet but not cloying; honey and lemon drop candies are balanced my an herbal quality that reminds you of a hot toddy. It’s soft and approachable. On a second pass I appreciate fresh rolls with butter and apricot jam. Simple and elegant. This is an easy sipper in the summer months.
