Putnam New England Rye Whiskey
Rye — Massachusetts , USA
Reviewed January 20, 2020 (edited January 22, 2020)Very little rye exposure for me so this is a novice review. Malty and perhaps a bit hot and peppery with clear oak notes in between and some vanilla too. Interesting how the sweetness develops with the rather sharp rye flavour. Medium to short but hot finish -
Highland Park 18 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed December 18, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)Nose: delicate peat that gives way to vanilla, honey and rope banana with some oak notes too. Mouth: again the peat is present but not overpowering, allowing other gentle, sweet and well rounded flavours to come through. Bit of orange peel and smoke. Finish: peaty and smoky, with indeed some bacon notes. -
Nose: very strong alcohol and young spirit. Nail polish and vinegar/petroleum. I find hard to find the sweet notes or the sherry even if it is a sherry bomb. Mouth: punchy and powerful. Spirit driven and strong. Again, more alcohol notes that sherry or oak influence for me. Bit spicy but not too much. Finish rather short and spicy with a bit of bitter/grassy notes.

Nose: caramel, toffee, nuts and honey come to mind with delicate back oak notes. Mouth: oily and rich. Complex and with layers of flavor and spice. Well integrated and harmonious mix of sherry, sweetness, wood and no alcohol burn. Finish: spicy and delicate at the same time. This one opened up beautifully after sitting in the glass 20+ mins and with 3-4 drops of water. Compared vis-à-vis Tullibardine 500 for a better known reference, which is what actually Distiller suggested below in my search. Small world!
